On a dry day, your brakes work with predictable efficiency. Introduce rain, however, and the dynamics change completely. Water on the road acts as a lubricant, creating a thin film between your brake pads and the spinning rotors. This film dramatically
reduces friction, which is essential for stopping power. As a result, your vehicle's stopping distance can increase significantly, a phenomenon sometimes called brake fade. Furthermore, continuous exposure to moisture can cause rust and corrosion on brake components, impairing their effectiveness over time. Even brake fluid can be compromised, as it can absorb moisture from the air, lowering its boiling point and making the brake pedal feel spongy or unresponsive.
Your Monsoon Brake Checklist
Before you set out, a pre-monsoon brake inspection is non-negotiable. First, have your brake fluid checked. If it's old or contaminated, it needs to be replaced to ensure hydraulic pressure remains optimal. Next, inspect the brake pads and rotors. Worn-out pads have less material to create friction and can't handle wet conditions effectively. Listen for any squealing, grinding, or vibrating noises when you brake, as these are clear warning signs that your system needs immediate attention. The Critical Role of Tyre Grip
Your tyres are the only part of your car in contact with the road. In the monsoon, their job is to cut through the layer of water to maintain that contact. When a tyre can no longer channel water away fast enough, it can lift off the road surface and ride on a film of water. This is known as aquaplaning or hydroplaning. When aquaplaning occurs, you lose the ability to steer, brake, or accelerate. The key to preventing this is a tyre's tread, which features deep grooves designed specifically to disperse water from the contact patch.
Essential Tyre Checks for Wet Roads
The most important tyre check for the monsoon is tread depth. While the legal minimum is often 1.6mm, for wet roads, more is always better as deeper grooves disperse more water. Worn tyres are a primary cause of skids on wet surfaces. You can check your tread with a dedicated gauge or look for the tread wear indicator bars located in the grooves. Secondly, maintain correct tyre pressure. Underinflated tyres can reduce grip and affect handling, while overinflated ones have a smaller contact patch with the road. Check your vehicle manufacturer's recommended pressure. Finally, ensure your wheels are properly aligned. Poor alignment causes uneven tyre wear, which compromises grip.
Beyond the Basics: Other Monsoon Musts
While brakes and tyres are the stars of the show, a few other checks are vital for monsoon safety. Ensure your wiper blades are not cracked or stiff; if they leave streaks, replace them immediately for clear visibility. Test all your lights—headlights, tail lights, and indicators—so you can see and be seen in low-light conditions and heavy downpours. It's also wise to clean out any leaves or debris from the drainage channels around your windshield and doors to prevent water from leaking into the cabin. Adopting a defensive driving style by slowing down, increasing your following distance, and avoiding sudden manoeuvres is the final piece of the safety puzzle.
