Planning Your Coastal Escape
A road trip down the Konkan coast is rewarding year-round, but the best time to visit is between October and March when the weather is pleasant and ideal for beach activities. The post-monsoon period, from September onwards, offers lush green landscapes
washed clean by the rains. Your journey will take you on a mix of national highways and scenic coastal roads, which can be winding and narrow in stretches. A private vehicle is highly recommended for flexibility. Pack light clothing, swimwear, sunscreen, and be prepared for an adventure that’s as much about the drive as it is about the destinations.
First Stop: Alibaug and its Quieter Neighbours
Just a few hours' drive from Mumbai, Alibaug is the quintessential first stop. While Alibaug beach itself can be bustling, it offers a fantastic view of the Kolaba Fort, a historic sea fortress you can walk to during low tide. For a more serene experience, head to the nearby Varsoli or Akshi beaches. Akshi, in particular, is known for its firm, clean sand and is far less crowded, making it perfect for a peaceful sunset walk. This area serves as a gentle introduction to the Konkan's blend of history and coastal charm before you head further south.
The Main Event: Kashid and Murud-Janjira
Continuing south from Alibaug, the drive to Kashid is where the coastal vistas truly begin to unfold. Kashid is often hailed as one of the most beautiful beaches in the region, boasting a 3-kilometre stretch of white sand and clear blue waters, fringed by casuarina groves. It's an ideal spot for swimming or simply relaxing. Just a short drive further lies Murud, home to the formidable Murud-Janjira Fort. This undefeated 17th-century marine fort, situated on an island, is accessible by a short boat ride from the Rajapuri jetty. Exploring its formidable ramparts offers a breathtaking panorama of the Arabian Sea and a tangible connection to the region's rich history.
Deeper South: The Serenity of Diveagar and Shrivardhan
For those willing to venture a bit further for tranquility, the twin beaches of Diveagar and Shrivardhan are worth the drive. This stretch is known for being less commercialized. Diveagar beach is a long, pristine stretch of clean sand, perfect for long walks and witnessing stunning sunsets. The village is also famous for its Suvarna Ganesh Temple. A short, scenic drive along the coast takes you to Shrivardhan, another quiet beach town. The drive between these two towns is one of the most picturesque parts of the journey, offering spectacular sea views. Here, you can truly embrace a slower pace of life.
Savouring the Journey: Konkan on a Plate
No Konkan trip is complete without indulging in the local cuisine. The food here is a celebration of fresh, local ingredients, with an emphasis on coconut and seafood. Look for small, family-run eateries called 'Khanavals' or 'Gharguthis' for the most authentic meals. Must-try dishes include Bombil (Bombay Duck) Fry, fresh Surmai (Kingfish) tawa-fried with Malvani spices, and Kolambhi Bhat (prawn pilaf). For a refreshing end to your meal, sip on Sol Kadhi, a cooling pink-hued drink made from kokum and coconut milk. Even simple vegetarian fare, like Ghavan (rice crepes) with coconut chutney, offers a delicious taste of the coast.
