A Promise, and a Paycheque
At the heart of the split was a familiar issue: money and respect. After the 2017 Champions League final, club president Florentino Pérez reportedly promised Ronaldo an improved contract to reflect his status as the world's best player. That promise never
materialised. Meanwhile, rivals Lionel Messi and Neymar were earning significantly more. For Ronaldo, it wasn't just about the money; it was about status. He felt the club's reluctance to offer a new deal was a sign of disrespect. An offer was eventually made, but it was heavily incentivised and fell short of what Ronaldo believed he deserved, which he saw as the final straw.
A Fractured Relationship
The contract dispute was a symptom of a much deeper issue: the crumbling relationship between Ronaldo and Pérez. In his first few years, Ronaldo felt like 'Cristiano Ronaldo', a cherished superstar. But in time, he felt Pérez began to see him as a business asset rather than the heart of the team. 'The president looked at me through eyes that didn't want to say the same thing, as if I was no longer indispensable to them,' Ronaldo later stated in an interview. This feeling that he was no longer essential was the primary driver that made him consider leaving the club he had redefined.
The Shadow of Neymar
Nothing made Ronaldo feel more dispensable than Pérez's public courtship of Neymar. The Real Madrid president made no secret of his desire to bring the Brazilian star to the Bernabéu. Reportedly, on the very night Ronaldo was awarded his fifth Ballon d'Or, Pérez commented that Neymar would have a better chance of winning the prestigious award if he played for Real Madrid. To Ronaldo, this was a profound insult. The club's president was openly flirting with his potential replacement during a moment meant to celebrate his own success. It reinforced Ronaldo's suspicion that the club was already planning for a future without him.
Tax Troubles and a Lack of Support
Adding another layer of stress was Ronaldo's high-profile tax fraud case in Spain. He was accused of defrauding the authorities of millions in income from image rights. During this difficult period, Ronaldo felt he didn't receive the public backing he expected from Real Madrid, especially when compared to the way Barcelona had supported Lionel Messi during his own tax issues. This perceived lack of institutional support further alienated him from the club, adding to his feeling of being alone and unappreciated. While Pérez later denied this was a factor, it was clear that the stress of the situation contributed to the breakdown of the relationship.
A New Challenge
Ultimately, the exit was a confluence of all these factors. Feeling unloved and disrespected by the president, Ronaldo sought a club that would make him feel wanted again. Juventus offered exactly that. They didn't just offer a lucrative contract; they offered him the central role and the adoration he felt he was no longer receiving in Madrid. For a player perpetually driven by new challenges, the opportunity to conquer another of Europe's top leagues was a powerful motivator. He had won everything with Real Madrid, and the move to Italy represented a chance to prove he could lead a new dynasty and leave his mark on another giant of world football.
