The Problem of Extremes
The core of the new challenge isn't just a simple change in the total amount of rain but a fundamental shift in its character. Climate change is altering the behaviour of the Indian monsoon. Instead of steady, soaking rains spread over weeks, India is increasingly
experiencing weather whiplash: long dry spells punctuated by sudden, intense downpours. This pattern leads to a paradoxical crisis of both flooding and drought. While intense rainfall causes soil erosion and flash floods that wash away nutrients, the extended dry periods that follow leave forests parched and vulnerable. This volatility is a direct threat to ecosystems that have evolved over millennia to thrive on a predictable seasonal cycle. Experts note this is the new reality, where climate change is fundamentally altering the monsoon's behaviour.
Vulnerable Ecosystems Under Threat
Different forest types are reacting to these shifts in unique ways. In central India, a study of the Panchmarhi Biosphere Reserve revealed that it lost about 13% of its forest cover between 1972 and 2020, with climate shifts being a major driver alongside human pressures. Dry deciduous forests, such as teak forests, are proving especially vulnerable, as they operate closer to their moisture limits and are less resilient to extended droughts. Meanwhile, in the Himalayas, changing precipitation patterns are forcing alpine species to move to higher, cooler altitudes. The delicate balance of these high-altitude ecosystems, which regulate the flow of major rivers, is being disrupted by the shift from snow to rain and erratic weather events.
A Tinderbox in the Making
One of the most immediate and dangerous consequences of erratic rainfall is the increased risk of forest fires. Longer and more frequent dry spells dry out the undergrowth, turning vast tracts of forest into a tinderbox. Consistently warming temperatures combined with lower precipitation create ideal conditions for fires to start and spread rapidly. This was identified as a significant factor in the forest loss within the Panchmarhi Biosphere Reserve. The fires don't just destroy trees; they release vast amounts of stored carbon into the atmosphere, eliminate vital habitat for wildlife, and compromise the forest's ability to regulate water cycles, creating a vicious feedback loop of degradation.
The Ripple Effect on Wildlife and People
The impacts extend far beyond the trees themselves. Wildlife is struggling to adapt to nature's broken calendar. For example, shifting rainfall patterns have caused elephants in southern India to wander beyond their traditional territories in search of food and water, increasing human-elephant conflicts. The timing of breeding cycles is being disrupted, threatening the survival of predator and prey species alike. For tens of millions of people who depend directly on forests for their livelihood, these changes are catastrophic. The availability of non-timber forest products is often more vulnerable to climate shifts than timber, threatening the economic foundation of many communities. Furthermore, as forests degrade, so does their ability to act as natural sponges, leading to diminished water security for downstream towns and cities that rely on forest-fed rivers and streams.
