Why Soup is the Perfect Monsoon Meal
During the rainy season, our digestive systems can become a bit sluggish. This is why warm, cooked, and easily digestible foods are often recommended. Soups fit this description perfectly. They are not only soothing and hydrating but can also be packed
with ingredients to boost immunity. Spices like ginger, garlic, turmeric, and black pepper, commonly used in Indian soups, are known for their health-boosting properties that help fend off seasonal colds and infections. A well-made soup provides nourishment without feeling heavy, making it an excellent choice for a light lunch or a comforting dinner as you listen to the rain outside.
Classic Moong Dal Soup
Moong dal soup is arguably one of the most comforting and healthiest options for the monsoon. It is incredibly light on the stomach and easy to digest, making it suitable for all ages. Rich in plant-based protein, it keeps you full and satisfied. To prepare this simple soup, pressure cook soaked yellow moong dal with turmeric and salt until it's completely soft. In a separate pan, prepare a tadka by heating a little ghee and sputtering cumin seeds. Add grated ginger and a pinch of asafoetida (hing) for flavour and digestive benefits. Pour this tempering over the cooked dal, mix well, garnish with fresh coriander, and serve hot. Its soluble fibre content aids digestion and promotes gut health.
Tangy Tomato Shorba
When you crave something tangy and flavourful, a Tomato Shorba is the perfect pick-me-up. This Indian-style tomato soup is thin, light, and spiced to perfection. Tomatoes are a great source of Vitamin C and antioxidants like lycopene, which are excellent for boosting immunity during a season rife with infections. To make it, sauté whole spices like a bay leaf and cloves, followed by ginger-garlic paste. Add chopped tomatoes, salt, and spices like a hint of red chilli powder and turmeric. Cook until the tomatoes are mushy, then add water and let it simmer. Finally, blend the mixture and strain it to get a smooth, clear soup. A dash of black pepper and a squeeze of lemon at the end elevates its taste and therapeutic properties.
Hearty Mixed Vegetable Clear Soup
A mixed vegetable soup is an excellent way to get a variety of nutrients in one bowl. It's light, hydrating, and can be made with any seasonal vegetables you have on hand, like carrots, beans, peas, and cabbage. The key is to keep the broth clear and flavourful. Start by sautéing finely chopped ginger and garlic in a little oil. Add your chopped vegetables and sauté for a few minutes before adding water or a light vegetable stock. Season with salt and a generous amount of crushed black pepper. Let the soup simmer until the vegetables are tender but still have a slight crunch. This soup is not only filling due to the fibre from the vegetables but also remains light and easy on the palate, making it a perfect wholesome meal for a rainy day.
