A Monumental Leap in Capacity
The core of this upgrade is a massive boost in performance. The new Passenger Reservation System (PRS) is engineered to handle a much larger volume of traffic, a critical need given that nearly 89% of all reserved tickets are now booked online. The previous
system could process around 32,000 bookings per minute, a number that often proved insufficient during peak demand, like the frantic Tatkal booking window. The new cloud-based platform aims to increase this capacity nearly five-fold, targeting over 1.5 lakh bookings per minute. Similarly, the system will be able to handle over 40 lakh enquiries per minute, a tenfold increase from the current 4 lakh. This leap is designed to reduce system crashes and make the booking process smoother, even during festival rushes.
Smarter Bookings with AI
Artificial Intelligence is a key feature of the upgraded system. One of the most practical applications for passengers is the enhanced waitlist prediction tool. Using AI, the system provides a more accurate forecast of the probability that a waitlisted ticket will be confirmed. This allows travellers to make more informed decisions, rather than booking and hoping. The AI can analyze historical booking trends, cancellation patterns, and other factors to give a clearer picture. This technology is part of a broader push by the Railways to use AI and Machine Learning for everything from predicting train delays to optimizing routes.
A New, User-Friendly Interface
The transition to the new backend system is being complemented by a redesigned IRCTC website, a beta version of which was launched in July 2026. This new interface aims to create a more seamless booking journey. Key improvements include a cleaner layout, fewer distracting pop-ups, and a simplified process for checking seat availability across different classes on a single screen. The goal is to reduce the number of steps required to book a ticket, making the experience faster and less confusing. Furthermore, the next-generation PRS will feature a multilingual interface, making it more accessible to users across the country who may not be comfortable with English.
The Phased Rollout Explained
This massive overhaul is not happening overnight. Indian Railways is implementing a phased migration to the new system, which began in August 2026. This means that trains are being moved to the new platform gradually to ensure stability and minimize any disruption to passengers. Officials have emphasized their focus on a smooth transition from the old system, which has been in operation since 1986. As a passenger, you may not notice a sudden switch, but rather a gradual improvement in performance and the introduction of new features on the website and app over time. This careful approach is essential for a critical piece of national infrastructure that handles millions of bookings daily.
What This Means for Tatkal
The daily scramble for Tatkal tickets is one of the biggest stress tests for the IRCTC platform. The massive increase in transaction capacity is expected to make this experience significantly less chaotic. By being able to handle a far greater number of simultaneous booking attempts, the new system should lead to fewer crashes and a higher success rate for genuine passengers. Separately, a new token-based system for Tatkal bookings at physical PRS counters was also introduced at the beginning of August in certain zones, designed to eliminate long queues and manage crowds more effectively. While the online and offline upgrades are distinct, they both point towards a concerted effort to streamline the high-demand Tatkal process.
