The Search for the Smartest Deal
Indian shoppers have always been value-conscious, but the digital age has equipped them with powerful tools to find the best possible price. Price-sensitivity remains a major factor in purchasing decisions. Before spending on festive gifts, from electronics
to apparel, consumers are turning to a variety of online channels to compare prices, track down discounts, and get notified about flash sales. This pre-purchase homework ensures they are not just buying a product, but securing it at the most advantageous price point. A recent Google-commissioned study by Ipsos highlights that nine in ten consumers now conduct extensive online research before making a purchase. This behaviour is less about being cheap and more about being a smart, informed buyer in a transparent marketplace.
Trust in the Digital Word-of-Mouth
Gone are the days when a brand's claims were the primary source of information. Today, trust is built through a distributed network of user reviews, ratings, unboxing videos, and influencer content. A significant 73% of festive buyers turn to content creators for inspiration. This digital word-of-mouth is seen as more authentic and relatable. Shoppers look to peers and trusted online personalities for honest feedback on product quality, performance, and overall experience before committing their money. This is especially true for younger cohorts like Gen Z, who value authenticity and peer recommendations over traditional advertising. For them, a product's journey often begins not with an ad, but with a reel or a story from a creator they follow.
The Rise of the Hybrid Shopper
The line between online and offline retail has blurred into a hybrid journey. A phenomenon known as 'Research Online, Purchase Offline' (ROPO), or webrooming, has become standard practice. Consumers use the internet as a vast digital catalogue to explore options, check specifications, and read reviews, but may complete the final purchase in a physical store. This is particularly common for high-value items where a touch-and-feel experience is still valued. Studies show that consumers are adept at moving between channels, using digital platforms for discovery and comparison, and physical stores for the final transaction and immediate gratification. This fluid movement highlights that the purchase journey is no longer linear but a complex dance between digital and physical touchpoints.
Inspiration in the Infinite Scroll
For many, especially Gen Z and millennials, the shopping journey doesn't start with a search query but with social discovery. Platforms like Instagram and YouTube are no longer just for connection; they are powerful engines of commerce and inspiration. Users discover new products and trends while casually scrolling through their feeds, often leading to unplanned but researched purchases. Seven in ten shoppers who discover a product on social media later use Google Search to investigate it further. This 'discovery commerce' is reshaping festive shopping from a planned activity into an ongoing process of inspiration, particularly in categories like fashion, home decor, and beauty. AI is also becoming a key ally, with shoppers using chatbots for gift ideas and product evaluations.
Aspiration Meets Nationwide Access
The digital boom has democratised access to trends and products far beyond India's metro cities. Consumers in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities now have the same window into global and national trends as their urban counterparts. They use online resources to discover the latest products and styles, creating a new wave of aspirational buyers. This has led to a surge in online retail, with these regions often outgrowing metros in categories like fashion and beauty. Whether they ultimately buy online or use their research to find similar products in local markets, the internet has empowered a new generation of consumers with knowledge and choice, making digital research an indispensable first step in their festive shopping.
