The New Surat-Udaipur Route
The Ministry of Railways has approved a new Vande Bharat Express that will connect Surat in Gujarat with Udaipur City in Rajasthan, a popular tourist destination. This new service, operated by Western Railway, will bridge the two states with a semi-high-speed
link, catering to both business and leisure travellers. The train, numbered 26903/26904, will run six days a week, excluding Tuesdays. The introduction of this route is a significant step in strengthening the rail network between southern Gujarat and southern Rajasthan, offering a much-anticipated premium travel option.
Schedule, Speed, and Stops
The train is set to cover the approximately 690-kilometer distance in about 7 hours and 30 minutes. Train number 26903 will depart from Surat at 6:10 AM and is scheduled to arrive in Udaipur City at 1:40 PM. On its return journey, train number 26904 will leave Udaipur City at 3:35 PM and reach Surat at 11:00 PM. During its journey, the train will make several key commercial stops, including Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Maninagar, Asarva, Himmatnagar, Shamlaji Road, Dungarpur, and Zawar, providing crucial connectivity to these intermediate towns. Though capable of speeds up to 160 kmph, its operational speed will depend on track conditions.
The Vande Bharat Onboard Experience
As with all Vande Bharat services, passengers on the Surat-Udaipur route can expect a significant upgrade in comfort and amenities. These indigenously manufactured trains feature a distributed power system for quicker acceleration and deceleration, ensuring a smoother ride. The eight-car trainset will be fully air-conditioned, with ergonomically designed seats, including rotating seats in the Executive Class. Onboard features include a GPS-based passenger information system, Wi-Fi for infotainment, automatic plug doors, bio-vacuum toilets, and CCTV cameras for enhanced safety. These modern facilities are designed to provide an experience comparable to air travel, fundamentally changing expectations for inter-city train journeys in India.
A Boost for Tourism and Economy
The new connection is poised to be a major catalyst for tourism and economic activity in both states. Udaipur, the 'City of Lakes', is a global tourist magnet, and a faster, more comfortable link from Gujarat's commercial hub of Surat is expected to drive visitor numbers. This increased connectivity benefits hotels, local businesses, and handicraft artisans. For business travellers, the reduced journey time allows for greater efficiency, potentially turning overnight trips into same-day returns. By connecting industrial centers with tourist destinations, the Vande Bharat network plays a crucial role in regional development, creating new opportunities for commerce and trade along its corridors.
Part of a National Modernisation Mission
The Surat-Udaipur service is another milestone in Indian Railways' ambitious Vande Bharat mission, which aims to modernize the country's passenger rail network. These semi-high-speed trains are a cornerstone of the 'Make in India' initiative, with a high degree of indigenous manufacturing. With over 100 services already operational across the country, the Vande Bharat network is rapidly expanding. The project is also evolving, with Vande Bharat sleeper trains now being introduced for long-distance overnight routes, promising to redefine premium long-haul travel in the near future. This continuous expansion underscores a national strategy to build a faster, more efficient, and passenger-focused railway system.
