Go Beyond a Basic 'Rain' Forecast
A simple rain cloud icon on your phone’s default weather app is not enough to plan a safe monsoon journey. The difference between a light, refreshing shower and a torrential downpour that can cause flash floods or landslides is vast. To make informed
decisions, you need to access more detailed meteorological data. This means understanding the intensity of expected rainfall, its duration, and the specific warnings issued by official agencies. Heavy or persistent rain can disrupt transport, cause waterlogging, and pose significant risks, especially in hilly or coastal regions. Knowing the specifics helps you decide whether to proceed with your plans, delay a leg of your journey, or change your itinerary altogether for a safer experience.
Decode the IMD Colour-Coded Alerts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) uses a four-colour coded warning system to communicate the severity of expected weather, which is crucial for travellers. A Green alert means 'All is Well' and no advisory is needed. A Yellow alert means 'Be Aware'; it signals the possibility of bad weather that could cause some disruption, so it’s a good idea to have buffer time in your schedule. An Orange alert means 'Be Prepared' for extremely bad weather that could disrupt travel and power. If you see an orange alert for a hilly destination, you should seriously reconsider your plans due to landslide risks. A Red alert means 'Take Action'. This is the highest warning, issued for conditions that pose a threat to life and property, like extremely heavy rain (over 204.5 mm in 24 hours). If a red alert is issued for your destination, you should not travel.
Use Both Nowcast and Extended Forecasts
Weather information is provided on different timescales, and using them correctly is key. The IMD provides 'Nowcasts' which are valid for a very short period, typically up to three to six hours, and provide location-specific information on impending severe weather. This is your go-to for immediate decisions, like whether it's safe to drive to the next town or visit a local viewpoint. For broader planning, use the short-to-medium range forecast, which covers up to seven days. This helps you see the general weather trend for your trip. For an even bigger picture, the extended-range forecast looks up to four weeks ahead. By combining these, you can plan your overall route with the extended forecast and make daily safety decisions using the nowcast.
Leverage Reliable Weather Apps and Websites
For the most accurate information, use apps and websites from official sources. The IMD's own 'Mausam' app provides forecasts, radar images, and severe weather warnings directly from the source. Another reliable Indian platform is 'Skymet Weather', which uses a large network of automatic weather stations to provide hyperlocal forecasts. These platforms offer more than just temperature; they provide data on rain probability, wind speed, and access to radar and satellite imagery. While popular international apps like AccuWeather are also useful, for monsoon travel in India, relying on India-specific services like Mausam and Skymet can provide a more accurate and nuanced picture of local conditions, including crucial alerts for events like cyclones and heavy rainfall.
Learn to Spot Trouble in Satellite Images
You don't need to be a meteorologist to get useful information from satellite imagery, which is often available on sites like the IMD's. On a visible satellite image, which is like a photo from space, very bright, dense white clouds often indicate thick cloud cover. Cumulonimbus clouds, which are associated with thunderstorms and heavy rain, appear particularly bright. Infrared images show temperature; colder (brighter white) cloud tops are generally higher in the atmosphere and can be associated with more intense weather. By looking at a loop of these images, you can see the direction in which weather systems are moving. If you see a large, bright, and expanding mass of clouds heading towards your location, it’s a clear sign to prepare for significant rainfall.
Pay Attention to Specific Warnings
Beyond the colour codes, look for specific terminology in the forecasts. Phrases like 'heavy to very heavy rainfall' or 'extremely heavy rainfall' correspond to specific quantitative amounts of rain and signal a high risk of flooding and disruption. Be especially cautious of warnings for 'cyclonic circulation' or 'thunderstorms', as these can bring sudden, intense downpours and strong winds. In mountainous and hilly areas, rainfall warnings are often accompanied by alerts for landslides. These are extremely dangerous and should always be taken seriously. If you're in a region prone to such events, any forecast for sustained, heavy rain is a signal to confirm your route is safe and to avoid travel if possible.
