The Pinch of Inflation
The most significant factor driving this meticulous research is the economic pressure on household budgets. With retail inflation rising to 5.54% in September 2026, the cost of everyday essentials is climbing. This has a direct impact on discretionary
spending. A survey by LocalCircles found that overall festive spending by urban households is expected to drop by 6% this year compared to last. Consequently, shoppers are forced to make their festive budgets stretch further. Sticking to a budget while still fulfilling festive traditions requires careful planning and a sharp eye for the best possible price. Many consumers report they plan to maintain their budget but shop smarter, while a significant portion intends to cut back on non-essential purchases altogether.
An Explosion of Choice
The days of comparing prices between just two major e-commerce giants are over. The Indian online marketplace is more fragmented and competitive than ever. Beyond the established players, a host of smaller, specialised, and direct-to-consumer (D2C) platforms are vying for attention. This proliferation of choice means a deal could be hiding anywhere. Furthermore, quick-commerce platforms like Blinkit and Zepto have entered the festive arena, offering rapid delivery on everything from sweets to last-minute gifts, adding another layer of options for consumers to evaluate. This competitive landscape pressures all retailers to offer aggressive discounts, and shoppers have learned that a few extra clicks can lead to significant savings.
The Rise of the Empowered Shopper
Today's consumer is not just a passive buyer; they are an empowered researcher armed with a multitude of digital tools. A staggering 96% of Indian shoppers now research products online before making a purchase. This research journey is extensive, with one Google study finding that festive shoppers conduct an average of eight online searches and watch nearly eight videos before deciding. Consumers are using everything from price comparison websites and browser extensions to dedicated deal-sharing communities on social media. The process has become more deliberate, with shoppers not just looking for discounts but also validating them. There's a growing awareness of inflated MRPs and fake offers, pushing consumers to cross-verify prices across multiple platforms to ensure a deal is genuine.
It's Not Just About Price, It's About Value
While price remains a primary motivator, the research process has evolved to encompass a broader definition of 'value'. An informed shopper now investigates more than just the final cost. They are digging into product reviews to understand long-term reliability, comparing warranty terms, scrutinising return policies, and checking seller ratings for service quality. A low price on an unreliable product or from a seller with poor after-sales support is no longer seen as a good deal. This holistic approach means research now includes assessing the total ownership experience. For many, a guaranteed reward or a product with dependable service is preferable to a flashy but uncertain discount.
AI and a New Generation of Tools
Artificial intelligence is no longer a futuristic concept but a practical shopping assistant. A recent study found that more than half of festive shoppers said AI helped them make purchase decisions, using chatbots an average of 7.5 times to evaluate products, especially in categories like electronics and home appliances. These tools help synthesise information, compare complex specifications, and surface relevant deals, making the research process more efficient. As consumers become more comfortable with these technologies, the depth of pre-purchase research is only set to increase, solidifying the shift from impulse buying to informed decision-making.
