Named after Goa's lifeline, the Mandovi River, this train has been a favourite among travellers since its inception. It offers various classes, from air-conditioned coaches to sleeper class, catering to different budgets. Beyond its convenient schedule, the train is also known colloquially as the "Food Queen of Konkan Railways," with a reputation for serving delicious onboard meals that enhance the journey.
The Main Event: Sighting Dudhsagar Falls
The crown jewel of this rail journey is the mighty Dudhsagar Falls, located on the Goa-Karnataka border. Translating to "Sea of Milk," this spectacular four-tiered waterfall thunders down from a height of over 300 metres. While the Mandovi Express route primarily follows the Konkan coast, trains on the connecting South Western Railway line between Kulem and Castle Rock pass directly by the falls. Passengers are treated to a phenomenal view as the train crosses a bridge right in front of the cascading water, often getting enveloped in its misty spray. This unforgettable sight is a highlight for anyone travelling through the region during the monsoon.
Beyond Dudhsagar: A Cascade of Surprises
While Dudhsagar is the most famous, the Konkan route is dotted with numerous other waterfalls, especially during peak monsoon. One notable example is the Ranpat Waterfall, located near Ukshi station in the Ratnagiri district. This waterfall becomes a graceful, milky cascade during the rains, and trains like the Mandovi Express and Jan Shatabdi Express pass close enough for passengers to get a mesmerising view right from their windows. Keep your eyes peeled throughout the journey, particularly in the sections around Ratnagiri, as you'll spot dozens of smaller, unnamed streams and waterfalls tumbling down the verdant hills.
Essential Tips for the Journey
To make the most of your waterfall-spotting adventure, planning is key. The best time to travel is between June and September, when the monsoon is at its peak and the waterfalls are in full flow. Be sure to book your tickets well in advance, as these scenic routes are incredibly popular during this season. For the best views of the coastline and waterfalls when travelling south from Mumbai towards Goa, try to get a window seat on the left side of the train. While AC coaches offer comfort, their tinted windows can sometimes dim the view, so many purists prefer the non-AC sleeper or second-class coaches for an unfiltered experience. Always carry some snacks, water, and a raincoat, as the weather can be unpredictable.
