Introducing the Green Marshals
Kerala’s Tourism Department has launched a 'Green Marshal' initiative, a pilot project designed to address long-standing challenges in waste management and visitor discipline at its most popular destinations. Rather than simply reacting to litter, this
programme introduces a proactive force for environmental stewardship. In the first phase, 162 Green Marshals will be deployed across key tourist hubs, including the serene backwaters of Alappuzha, the misty hills of Munnar, the historic lanes of Fort Kochi, and the beaches of Kovalam. These individuals are tasked with creating a visitor-friendly atmosphere while ensuring the state’s green protocols are followed.
More Than Just Cleaning
The role of a Green Marshal goes far beyond supervision. They are on-the-ground ambassadors for responsible tourism. Their duties include enforcing rules against plastic use and littering, guiding tourists with local information, and promoting sustainable travel habits. They will also monitor for risky behaviours, such as unsafe selfie attempts, and are equipped to provide basic emergency assistance. According to tourism officials, the goal is to shift destination management from a reactive cleanup model to one of proactive care. By interacting directly with visitors and connecting them to local eco-friendly businesses and homestays, the marshals aim to embed a culture of responsibility among travellers.
A Professional and Visible Presence
To ensure they are easily identifiable and approachable, Green Marshals will wear a distinctive forest-green and white uniform featuring official Kerala Tourism branding. They will be equipped with photo ID cards, helpline numbers, and first-aid kits. Before deployment, all marshals undergo a comprehensive training programme covering environmental protocols, effective communication, safety monitoring, and field management. This professionalises their role, establishing them as trained representatives dedicated to keeping Kerala's destinations safe and pristine. Information kiosks at entry points will introduce them to visitors, reinforcing their official capacity and friendly mission.
Part of a Broader Green Vision
This initiative is the latest step in Kerala's long-standing commitment to sustainable and responsible tourism. It builds on previous programmes like the 'Green Carpet' initiative, which focused on improving infrastructure and community participation in destination management. That earlier plan also called for designated destination managers and task forces to address ground-level concerns like waste and safety. More recently, on World Tourism Day, Tourism Minister P. A. Mohamed Riyas has consistently highlighted the importance of cleanliness and community involvement, launching initiatives like the 'Destination Adoption' programme run by tourism clubs to keep sites clean and green. The Green Marshal programme is a direct and practical extension of this vision, putting dedicated personnel in place to ensure these goals are met daily.
What This Means for Visitors
For tourists, the presence of Green Marshals promises a cleaner, safer, and more pleasant experience. It provides a reliable point of contact for information and assistance, enhancing the overall quality of a visit. For Kerala, the initiative is a crucial investment in its most valuable asset: its natural beauty. By ensuring its top destinations are impeccably maintained, the state reinforces its brand as a premium, responsible tourism hub. This commitment is vital for long-term sustainability, ensuring that the economic benefits of tourism do not come at an environmental cost and that 'God's Own Country' remains a cherished destination for generations to come.
