The annual scramble for Diwali train tickets is here. With services fully booked weeks in advance, finding a last-minute seat can feel impossible. But special trains offer a glimmer of hope. Here’s your guide to finding and booking them.
Understanding the Diwali Rush
Every year, as
Diwali approaches, a massive wave of people travels from major cities to their hometowns to celebrate with family. This creates an unprecedented demand for train tickets. Regular trains are often fully booked months in advance, leaving many scrambling for a spot. To manage this surge, Indian Railways announces 'Festival Special' trains. These are additional services deployed on high-demand routes specifically for the festive season, which in 2026 includes Dussehra, Diwali (on November 8), and Chhath Puja. These trains are the best hope for travellers who couldn't secure a ticket on a regular service. However, they are announced in phases and can have different booking windows, making it crucial to know where and how to track them.
Your Primary Tool: The NTES App
The most powerful tool at your disposal is the official National Train Enquiry System (NTES) mobile app, developed by CRIS, the IT wing of Indian Railways. This app provides the most accurate, real-time data directly from the railway's control system. Unlike third-party apps, NTES is the authoritative source for train schedules, live running status, and platform numbers. For finding special trains, its 'Trains B/w Stations' feature is invaluable. You can enter your source and destination stations and then filter the results to show only 'Special' trains. Another critical feature is 'Live Station', which shows all trains scheduled to arrive at or depart from a specific station within the next 2, 4, or 8 hours. This can help you spot a newly announced special service that might not have appeared in your initial search. The app also has dedicated sections for 'Cancelled', 'Rescheduled', and 'Diverted' trains, which is essential information during the often-congested festive season.
Finding Announcements on IRCTC
The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) website and its 'Rail Connect' app are where all bookings happen. While NTES is for tracking, IRCTC is for booking. When special trains are announced, they appear in the regular search results on the IRCTC platform when you search for trains between your desired stations. Most special trains are identifiable by their five-digit number, which usually starts with a '0'. It's a good practice to regularly check the 'Press Releases' or 'Updates' section on the IRCTC website, as this is often where the first official announcements of new special services are made. Various railway zones, like Northern Railway or Central Railway, also post these announcements on their individual websites and social media handles first.
Pro Tips for Securing a Ticket
Finding a special train is only half the battle; booking it is the real challenge. First, be flexible. Consider booking your ticket to or from a nearby, less-popular station instead of the main city hub. Second, keep your passenger details saved in a 'Master List' on your IRCTC account to speed up the checkout process, as tickets can sell out in seconds. Third, understand the different quotas. While Tatkal might be available on some special trains, it’s not a guarantee. A lesser-known trick is to use the 'Charts / Vacancy' feature on the IRCTC website. This option becomes available about four hours before a train's departure and shows a real-time layout of empty seats after the final chart is prepared. These could be from last-minute cancellations or un-booked quota seats. You can book these vacant seats directly through the app or, if you're already at the station, show the vacant seat to the Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) to have it allotted to you.
