you must have an Indian passport with at least six months of validity from your date of arrival. Additionally, you need to complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online within three days before your arrival. At immigration, be prepared to show proof of a confirmed return or onward flight ticket and details of your accommodation, such as hotel bookings. While not always asked for, proof of sufficient funds for your stay is also a formal requirement.
Thailand: A Return to Simpler Rules
Thailand's visa policy has seen some adjustments. After a period of offering 60-day visa-free stays, the rules have been revised. As of mid-2026, Thailand provides a 30-day visa-free entry for Indian passport holders. For the majority of tourists planning a holiday of one to two weeks, this 30-day limit is more than sufficient and simplifies travel. The previous Visa on Arrival system for Indians has been withdrawn in favour of this direct visa-free access. Indonesia: E-Visa on Arrival is Key
While Indonesia previously had a broad visa-free entry policy, it is currently suspended for many nationalities, including India. As of 2026, Indian citizens must obtain a visa to enter Indonesia. The most straightforward method for tourists is the Electronic Visa on Arrival (e-VOA). This allows for an initial stay of 30 days and can be extended once for another 30 days. To apply for the e-VOA, your passport must be valid for at least six months from your arrival date. You'll also need a confirmed return or onward ticket. For those visiting Bali, remember there is a mandatory regional tourist levy of IDR 150,000 (approximately ₹800), which is best paid online before your trip to avoid airport queues. Lawmakers are reportedly considering reinstating visa-free access for Indians, but this has not been finalised.
Vietnam: The 90-Day E-Visa Advantage
For mainland Vietnam, a visa is required for Indian citizens. The best and most popular option is the 90-day e-visa, which can be used for single or multiple entries. This system, introduced in late 2023, has made planning longer trips across the country much easier. The application is done entirely online through the official government portal, and the fee is $25 for a single entry or $50 for multiple entries. The standard processing time is about 3-5 working days, so it's wise to apply at least two weeks before your departure. For a completely visa-free experience, consider flying directly to Phu Quoc island, where Indian passport holders can stay for up to 30 days without a visa.
Sri Lanka: Simple Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)
Sri Lanka offers a streamlined process for Indian tourists. Instead of a traditional visa, you need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before you travel. Some recent reports indicate that Sri Lanka is offering free 30-day visas on arrival for tourists from several countries, including India, to boost tourism. However, the official advice remains to secure an ETA online beforehand to ensure a smooth process. The ETA is typically approved within 24-48 hours and allows for a stay of up to 30 days. A visa on arrival may still be available at Bandaranaike International Airport, but applying for the ETA in advance is the preferred and more reliable method.
