First Things First: No Visa on Arrival
Unlike some destinations, Japan does not offer a visa-on-arrival facility for Indian passport holders. Every traveller from India, whether for tourism, business, or visiting family, must obtain a visa before departing. The good news is that the process
is well-defined. Applications are typically submitted through VFS Global centres, which handle the administrative side for the Embassy of Japan. The standard processing time is about five to ten working days, but it's wise to apply at least three to four weeks in advance, especially during peak travel seasons like the cherry blossom period.
The eVisa Option for Tourists
To streamline the process, Japan introduced an e-visa system for Indian citizens for tourism purposes. This allows for a single-entry visa valid for a stay of up to 90 days. The application is still facilitated through VFS Global, but the outcome is a digital “Visa Issuance Notice” instead of a physical sticker in your passport. When travelling, you must be able to display this notice on a mobile device with internet access at the airport; screenshots or printouts are not accepted. For multiple-entry visas or other travel purposes, the traditional paper application process remains in effect.
Your Essential Document Checklist
A successful visa application hinges on meticulous documentation. While requirements can vary slightly, a standard application for a tourist visa requires a valid passport with at least six months of validity and two blank pages. You'll also need a completed visa application form, a recent passport-sized photograph with a white background, confirmed return flight bookings, and proof of accommodation for your entire stay. One of the most critical components is a detailed day-by-day itinerary of your planned activities in Japan.
Proving Financial Stability
You must demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to cover your trip. This is typically done by providing your last six months of bank statements. While there's no official minimum balance, a healthy and consistent account history is more important than a last-minute large deposit. In addition to bank statements, you will generally need to submit your Income Tax Returns (ITR) for the last two or three years and recent salary slips if you are employed. This documentation helps assure the consulate of your financial stability and your intent to return to India.
The Application Journey and Fees
The process begins by downloading the application form and gathering your documents. You then book an appointment at your nearest VFS Global centre to submit your file. As of April 2026, the visa fee for Indian nationals for a single or multiple-entry short-term visa is a nominal INR 500. On top of this, VFS Global charges a service fee. Once submitted, you can track your application online. A little preparation goes a long way in preventing common errors like incomplete forms or incorrect photo specifications, which are frequent reasons for delays.
