What is Monsoon Withdrawal?
Think of the monsoon's arrival as an advancing army of moisture-laden winds. The withdrawal is its slow, staggered retreat. This process officially begins when the atmospheric conditions that support the monsoon—primarily wind direction and pressure systems—start
to reverse. Typically, the withdrawal starts from the northwestern-most parts of India, like West Rajasthan, around mid-September. From there, it gradually moves southeast over several weeks, with dry, anti-cyclonic winds replacing the moist southwesterlies. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has specific criteria for declaring the withdrawal, including a significant reduction in rainfall, a drop in humidity, and the establishment of these anti-cyclonic winds over an area for several consecutive days.
This Year's Erratic Timeline
The 2026 monsoon season has been characterized by its erratic nature, influenced by a strengthening El Niño. After a record-hot August with a significant rainfall deficit, the final phase continues this unpredictable trend. While satellite imagery shows sharply reduced cloud cover over large parts of northwest and central India, the IMD has indicated the formal withdrawal process is expected to begin after September 15. This is broadly in line with the normal date of September 17. However, meteorologists note that in recent years, the retreat has often been just as erratic as the monsoon's arrival and stay, making a fixed timeline difficult to pin down.
A Tale of Two Weather Patterns
The phrase "monsoon withdrawal" can be misleading. While it signals the end of rains for one part of the country, it can trigger intense rainfall in another. As the monsoon retreats from the north, there is often a corresponding increase in weather activity over the peninsular and eastern regions. A low-pressure area developing over the Bay of Bengal, for instance, is expected to enhance rainfall across West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Odisha. This phenomenon means that on the same day, Rajasthan could be experiencing dry, post-monsoon weather while parts of eastern or southern India are dealing with heavy showers and thunderstorms.
Who Gets Rain, and Who Stays Dry?
The IMD's forecasts for September and the withdrawal period paint a divided picture. Northwest India is set to see a significant reduction in rain as dry northwesterly winds take hold. In contrast, fairly widespread rainfall is predicted for several states in the east, northeast, and central India through mid-September. Regions like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand might still see bursts of heavy rain. Meanwhile, Peninsular India, which has been largely dry this season, could see an increase in thunderstorm activity as the withdrawal proceeds, which is a typical feature of this transition period. This shift is crucial for southern states that depend on post-monsoon showers.
Impact on Agriculture and Beyond
This shifting rainfall pattern has major implications, especially for agriculture. The overall monsoon deficit this year has already stressed summer-sown (Kharif) crops, which are in a critical growth phase. Below-average September rain could further impact yields of rice, cotton, and soybeans. Furthermore, the amount of rainfall during the withdrawal phase determines the soil moisture for the upcoming winter (Rabi) crops like wheat and chickpeas.
