To understand why humidity wrecks our sleep, we first need to look at how our bodies prepare for rest. A crucial part of falling asleep involves a process called thermoregulation. Your body’s core temperature needs to drop slightly, which signals to your
brain that it's time for bed. One of the primary ways the body cools itself is through the evaporation of sweat. Here’s the problem: when the air is already saturated with moisture—as it is during the high-humidity monsoon season—sweat can't evaporate efficiently from your skin. This disrupts your body's natural cooling mechanism, preventing your core temperature from dropping as it should. As a result, you might find it harder to fall asleep, wake up more frequently, and spend less time in the deep, restorative stages of sleep.
Why the Monsoon Makes It Worse
During the Indian monsoon, relative humidity levels often soar well above the ideal range for sleeping, which is generally considered to be between 40% and 60%. When humidity levels exceed 60%, the air feels heavy and muggy, creating an uncomfortable sleeping environment. This sticky feeling can lead to significant discomfort and restlessness. Furthermore, these damp conditions are a perfect breeding ground for allergens like mould, mildew, and dust mites, which can thrive in bedding, wardrobes, and on walls. For many people, especially those with allergies or asthma, this can trigger respiratory issues, congestion, and other symptoms that further disrupt a peaceful night's rest.
Creating Your Ideal Sleep Zone
The key to better sleep during the rainy season is to take control of your bedroom environment. The first step is to actively manage humidity. A dehumidifier is the most effective tool for this, as it directly removes excess moisture from the air. If you have an air conditioner, using its 'dry mode' can also significantly reduce humidity without making the room too cold. Proper ventilation is another crucial element. When it’s not raining heavily, open windows on opposite sides of the room for at least 15-30 minutes a day to encourage cross-ventilation and flush out stale, damp air. Using a ceiling fan also helps by keeping air circulating, which can prevent the air from feeling stagnant and can aid in evaporative cooling.
Simple Habits for Drier Nights
Beyond gadgets and ventilation, a few simple changes in your routine can make a big difference. Opt for bedsheets made from breathable, natural fabrics like pure cotton, which absorb moisture better than synthetic blends. Avoid drying clothes inside your bedroom, as this releases a large amount of moisture into the air. You can also use natural moisture absorbers like silica gel packets, rock salt, or activated charcoal placed in wardrobes and room corners to passively soak up dampness. Before getting into bed, consider pulling back your covers for about 30 minutes and running the fan; this helps air out any moisture trapped in your mattress and pillows from the previous night.
Other Factors to Consider
While humidity is a major factor, it’s not the only monsoon-related sleep disruptor. The noise from heavy rain or thunderstorms can disturb light sleepers. Additionally, the dark, gloomy days can throw off our internal body clock, or circadian rhythm, which relies on light cues. This can sometimes lead to daytime lethargy and an altered sleep schedule. Try to maintain a consistent sleep-wake routine, even on weekends. Ensure your bedroom is dark and quiet. If outside noise is an issue, consider using earplugs. Taking these small but consistent steps can help you reclaim your rest, even when it's pouring outside.
