What is the New Rule?
The Thai government has officially confirmed that Indian passport holders will continue to benefit from visa-free entry into Thailand. However, there's a key change: the maximum permitted stay has been set at 30 days. This decision was made by the Thai cabinet
on July 14, 2026, aiming to standardize rules and manage tourism flow effectively. Previously, Indian travellers enjoyed a temporary 60-day visa exemption, but this has now been revised. The new 30-day rule provides clarity for tourists after a period of uncertainty where a complete withdrawal of the visa-free scheme was being considered.
Why Was the Change Made?
The adjustment from a 60-day to a 30-day stay is part of a broader overhaul of Thailand's visa policies. Thai authorities cited concerns over the misuse of the longer 60-day visa, including instances of foreigners overstaying or engaging in illegal work. The government has stressed that the new 30-day limit is designed to strengthen immigration controls while still encouraging tourism. According to Thailand's Tourism Minister, Surasak Phancharoenworakul, the initial confusion caused by the proposed changes led to a drop in arrivals from India, a key tourism market. Reinstating a clear, albeit shorter, visa-free period is intended to reverse this decline and align the policy with the typical travel behavior of Indian tourists, whose average stay is around seven to ten days.
Who is Eligible and For How Long?
This rule applies to all Indian citizens holding a valid ordinary passport and travelling to Thailand for tourism purposes. The 30-day visa-free entry is a permanent arrangement for now, replacing the previous temporary extensions and the more restrictive visa-on-arrival system that was feared to return. This new framework benefits visitors from India along with several other nations, including Croatia, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Malta, and the Maldives. The measure is set to take effect 15 days after its official publication in Thailand's Royal Gazette, so travellers should monitor official announcements for the precise start date.
What Does This Mean For Your Travel Plans?
For the vast majority of Indian tourists, this change will have minimal impact. Since most holidays to Thailand are well under 30 days, the new rule is more than sufficient for a typical vacation, whether it’s exploring Bangkok's vibrant streets, relaxing on the beaches of Phuket, or island-hopping in Krabi. The key benefit is that you can continue to travel spontaneously without the need to apply for a visa beforehand. However, if you are planning a longer trip, you will need to apply for an appropriate tourist visa before you travel or investigate the possibility of an extension once in Thailand through their official immigration channels.
What Documents Should You Still Carry?
While you don't need a pre-approved visa sticker, you are not entirely free from documentation. Standard immigration rules still apply. Be prepared to present a passport with at least six months of validity from your date of entry. You should also have proof of a confirmed return flight, details of your accommodation, and potentially proof of sufficient funds for your stay. It's always a good practice to have these documents readily accessible to ensure a smooth entry process at the airport. Checking the latest requirements on the official Royal Thai Embassy website before your departure is highly recommended.
