This means practical portfolios, industry certifications, and hands-on project experience are becoming the most important signals of employability for recruiters in the current market.

Python continues to be the foundational programming language for AI, but expectations have risen; employers now look for the ability to build and manage functional pipelines, not just write basic scripts. According to NASSCOM, there is a significant demand-supply gap for AI and machine learning professionals in India, with skills in Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) being a top priority for companies moving from pilots to practical deployment. Other critical hard skills include a solid grasp of data science and analytics, cloud computing platforms like AWS and Azure, and MLOps, which involves deploying, monitoring, and scaling AI models in a production environment.
The Soft Skills Differentiator
As AI automates routine technical tasks, human-centric skills have become more valuable than ever. Employers are aggressively screening for soft skills because they are capabilities AI cannot replicate. According to a NASSCOM survey, a majority of hiring managers in India consider communication skills as important as technical expertise. The ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical colleagues and clients is a highly prized trait. Other crucial soft skills include critical thinking, emotional intelligence, adaptability, and strong problem-solving abilities.
