Master Your Bookings in Advance
Spontaneity is great, but not for festive train travel. Book your tickets as soon as the window opens, which is typically 60 days in advance for most trains. Keep an eye out for special festival trains announced by Indian Railways to handle the extra
rush; these are often listed on the IRCTC portal and NTES app. For last-minute plans, the Tatkal quota is your best bet. Bookings open one day before the journey at 10 AM for AC classes and 11 AM for non-AC classes. To succeed, be logged into the IRCTC website or app with a stable internet connection a few minutes before the booking time. Keep passenger details saved in a master list to fill the form quickly.
Pack Smart and Light
Navigating a crowded station with heavy luggage is a nightmare. Pack only what you need and be mindful of the luggage limits. For AC First Class, the free allowance is 70 kg; AC 2-Tier is 50 kg; and AC 3-Tier and Sleeper Class are 40 kg. Exceeding these limits can lead to penalties. Pack your belongings in sturdy, lockable bags. Essentials for a comfortable journey include a light blanket or shawl for chilly AC coaches, comfortable and loose-fitting clothes, and flip-flops for using the washroom. A small daypack with your valuables like wallet, phone, tickets, and medication should always be with you, not left in the main luggage.
Prioritise Health and Hygiene
Train journeys can be long, so hygiene is crucial. Prepare a small kit containing hand sanitiser, soap, toilet paper, wet wipes, and a toothbrush. While pantry cars and station vendors are available, it's wise to carry some of your own snacks like fruits, nuts, and biscuits, especially if you're travelling with children. Always carry a refillable water bottle and buy sealed water bottles like Rail Neer when you need more. For meals, consider using IRCTC's official e-Catering service, available via the 'Food on Track' app or website. You can order from a variety of restaurants, and the food will be delivered to your seat at a designated station.
Stay Safe and Secure Onboard
Crowded trains require extra vigilance. Always lock your luggage and, if possible, secure it with a chain to the hooks under the lower berth. Keep your small bag with valuables under your head while sleeping. If travelling solo, especially as a woman, try to book an upper berth for more privacy. Be wary of accepting food from strangers and keep your phone charged, perhaps carrying a power bank. For any security concerns, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) can be reached by dialling the helpline number 139.
Leverage Technology for a Better Trip
Several official and third-party apps can make your journey significantly easier. The National Train Enquiry System (NTES) app provides real-time train running status, including delays and platform numbers. The IRCTC Rail Connect app is essential for booking tickets. For a consolidated experience, Indian Railways has also introduced a super-app called 'RailOne' which integrates services like ticket booking, PNR status, live tracking, and ordering food. Using these apps can help you stay informed and avoid last-minute panic at the station. Setting a destination alarm on your phone or a dedicated app can also ensure you don't miss your stop during an overnight journey.
