An End to the Temporary Bonus
First, let's address the big change. The temporary visa scheme that granted travellers from 93 countries, including India, a 60-day visa-free stay has been officially discontinued. The Thai government announced the change in mid-July 2026, citing a need
to streamline its entry rules and prevent misuse of the generous extension. This policy shift was part of a broader review to create a more secure and sustainable tourism framework under the principle of “one country, one entitlement.” While the end of the 60-day period might seem like a step back, the new system is designed to provide more long-term predictability for travellers, replacing a temporary measure with a more permanent structure.
Great News for Indian Holidaymakers
For Indian tourists, the update brings excellent news and removes recent uncertainty. Amid the policy overhaul, there were concerns that India might revert to a more restrictive and costly Visa on Arrival system. However, the Thai Cabinet has instead upgraded India’s status. Indian passport holders are now officially included in the list of 59 nationalities granted a 30-day visa-free entry. This is a significant win, offering hassle-free access without the fees or paperwork associated with a visa on arrival. Given that the average trip for Indian visitors is about seven days, the new 30-day period provides ample time for most holiday plans, from exploring Bangkok’s temples to relaxing on the southern beaches.
A Smarter Choice for Longer Stays
The most exciting part of Thailand's policy update is the introduction of the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), often called the 'digital nomad' visa. This new category is a game-changer for remote workers, freelancers, and anyone wanting to immerse themselves in Thai culture for an extended period. The DTV is valid for five years and allows multiple entries, with each stay lasting up to 180 days. This effectively eliminates the need for constant 'visa runs' and provides a stable, legal way to live and work remotely from the country. The visa is also available for those pursuing long-term courses in activities like Muay Thai or Thai cooking.
How to Qualify for the DTV
Planning to make Thailand your home office? To qualify for the Destination Thailand Visa, applicants must be at least 20 years old and demonstrate sufficient financial means to support their stay. This typically requires showing proof of at least 500,000 THB (approximately ₹11.5 lakh) in a bank account. It is important to note that the DTV permits remote work for foreign-based companies; it does not allow you to take up employment with a Thai company. In a move that makes long-term planning even smarter, DTV holders can also bring their spouse and children under the age of 20 as dependents, making it a viable option for families.
