To understand why humidity is so disruptive, we first need to look at how the body cools itself. This process, called thermoregulation, is crucial for falling and staying asleep. As you prepare for sleep, your core body temperature naturally needs to drop
by about one to two degrees. One of the primary ways the body achieves this is by producing sweat. As sweat evaporates from your skin, it releases heat and cools you down, acting like a personal air conditioner. This evaporation process is highly efficient in dry air, allowing your body to maintain a comfortable temperature for deep, restorative rest.
How Humidity Sabotages Sleep
During the monsoon, relative humidity can often climb above 60%, the threshold where comfort starts to decline. When the air is already saturated with water vapour, it drastically slows down the evaporation of sweat from your skin. Instead of vanishing and taking heat with it, the sweat lingers, leaving you feeling sticky, clammy, and overheated. Your body keeps producing sweat in an attempt to cool down, but with nowhere for it to go, your core temperature remains elevated. This biological struggle prevents the necessary temperature drop required to enter and sustain the deep and REM stages of sleep, leading to increased wakefulness and a restless night.
The Unseen Effects of a Damp Room
Beyond the immediate discomfort, high humidity creates other problems that interfere with sleep. Damp environments are ideal breeding grounds for allergens like mould, mildew, and dust mites, which thrive in mattresses and bedding. For many people, this can trigger allergies, stuffy noses, coughing, and other respiratory issues that cause nighttime awakenings. Over time, the moisture can even make bedding and furnishings feel damp and develop a musty odour, further detracting from a restful bedroom atmosphere.
Find Your Ideal Sleep Zone
While there is some debate, most experts, including the Environmental Protection Agency, suggest that the ideal indoor relative humidity for comfort and health is between 30% and 50%. It should ideally not exceed 60%. This range is dry enough to allow your body's cooling system to function efficiently but moist enough to prevent issues like a dry throat or irritated sinuses. Paired with a cool room temperature, generally between 18°C and 21°C, this creates the optimal environment for your body to achieve the temperature drop needed for quality sleep.
Invest in a Dehumidifier
One of the most effective tools for combating monsoon humidity is a dehumidifier. This appliance works by drawing in moist air, cooling it to condense the water vapour into water, and then releasing the drier air back into the room. Placing one in your bedroom can make a significant difference in maintaining that ideal 30-50% humidity level, allowing you to feel more comfortable and sleep without that sticky feeling. Many modern units have a humidistat that automatically maintains your desired setting.
Promote Air Circulation
Stagnant air traps heat and moisture around your body while you sleep. Using fans—whether ceiling, pedestal, or exhaust fans in an adjoining bathroom—is a simple way to keep air moving. Good airflow helps enhance the evaporative cooling process, even in humid conditions. On drier days, opening windows to ventilate the entire home can help reduce overall indoor moisture levels. When it's raining, focus on internal circulation to prevent the air from becoming stale and heavy.
Choose Breathable Fabrics
The fabrics you sleep on and in play a huge role in your comfort. Heavy, synthetic materials like polyester trap heat and moisture against your skin. Instead, opt for lightweight, breathable, natural fabrics such as cotton or linen for your bedsheets and sleepwear. These materials are much better at wicking moisture away from the body and allowing for better airflow, which helps keep you cooler and drier throughout the night.
