An Engineering Marvel Realised
The dream of connecting the Kashmir Valley to the rest of India via an all-weather railway is now a reality. The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) is a monumental feat of engineering, navigating the treacherous Pir Panjal mountain range. This
project includes the Chenab Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge, which stands taller than the Eiffel Tower. After clearing its final safety inspections in August 2026, this critical link is open, heralding a new age for tourism and connectivity in the region. This means travelers can now enjoy an uninterrupted, breathtaking train journey directly into the heart of the valley.
Your New Route to Paradise
The new service effectively connects major Indian cities to Srinagar, though a simple change of trains is required at a key junction. The most common route involves taking a train like the Vande Bharat Express from New Delhi to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) station. From Katra, passengers can board a connecting train, often another Vande Bharat service, that travels through the newly opened section, crossing the magnificent Chenab Bridge and passing through numerous tunnels before arriving in Srinagar. This two-leg journey is designed to be seamless, with transit times at Katra kept minimal. The full journey from Delhi can now be completed in under 13 hours, offering a comfortable and cost-effective alternative to flying.
Booking Your Train Journey
Securing your tickets for this popular new route requires some advance planning, especially during peak tourist seasons like spring and summer. Tickets can be booked through the official Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) website or their mobile app. When booking, you will need to book two separate legs: one to Katra (SVDK) and the second from Katra (SVDK) to Srinagar (SINA). It is highly recommended to book your tickets well in advance, as services like the Vande Bharat Express are in high demand. The Srinagar Railway Station itself is a modern, clean facility with amenities like waiting rooms, food stalls, and booking counters.
Planning Your Kashmir Itinerary
Upon arrival at Srinagar Railway Station, located in the Nowgam area, you can easily find taxis to take you to the city center, Dal Lake, or your hotel. For a first-time visitor, a 5 to 7-day itinerary is ideal. Start with 2-3 days in Srinagar itself. Experience the quintessential houseboat stay on Dal Lake, take a serene shikara ride at sunrise, and visit the famous Mughal Gardens—Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, and Chashme Shahi. Dedicate a day trip to Gulmarg, the 'Meadow of Flowers', known for its gondola ride that offers stunning views of snow-capped peaks. Another must-do is a trip to Pahalgam, a picturesque town on the banks of the Lidder River, which serves as a base for many scenic treks.
Essential Travel Tips
To make your journey smooth, keep a few things in mind. The best time to visit depends on what you want to experience: spring (March-May) for blooming flowers, summer (June-August) for pleasant weather, and winter (December-February) for snow. Pack layers of clothing as the weather can change quickly, even in summer. For mobile connectivity, postpaid SIM cards from other states typically work well, but prepaid connections may have restrictions. It's always wise to carry some cash, especially when travelling to more remote areas like Gulmarg or Pahalgam, though digital payments are becoming more common. Lastly, embrace the local culture with warmth and respect for an enriching experience.
