A Festival of Epic Proportions
Durga Puja in Kolkata is more than a religious festival; it's an emotion, a city-wide carnival of creativity recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. For five days, life revolves around 'pandal-hopping'—journeying through thousands of temporary
structures, or pandals, each housing an idol of Goddess Durga. These are not just simple tents but monumental installations, where communities and artists collaborate to tell stories, push artistic boundaries, and create immersive experiences that draw millions of visitors. The themes are vast and varied, ranging from replicas of historic temples to profound social commentaries, turning every street corner into a potential discovery.
The Soul of the Pandal: Heritage Crafts
At the heart of this grand spectacle lie the traditional artisans. For generations, craftsmen from areas like Kumartuli have sculpted the divine idols from river clay, a foundational ritual of the festival. Beyond the idol, entire ecosystems of craft thrive. Intricate 'patachitra' scrolls depict mythological narratives, 'dokra' metal casting lends a rustic charm, and delicate 'sholapith' (Indian cork) is carved for the 'chaalchitra', the ornate backdrop to the Goddess. Many pandals in 2026 continue to champion these skills. At Santoshpur Trikon Park, the theme 'Prakriti' (nature) intentionally focuses on the natural elements integral to the puja, from straw and clay to shola, celebrating the very materials of tradition. Similarly, the use of bamboo, jute, and recycled paper remains a priority for many committees, honouring both environmental concerns and rural craftsmanship.
The Dawn of a Digital Canvas
This year, however, these timeless techniques are being augmented by a dazzling array of modern technology. Projection mapping has emerged as a favourite tool, transforming pandal facades into dynamic storyboards. At Suruchi Sangha, known for its artistic lighting, theatrical illumination and projection mapping are used to highlight intricate handicraft work, creating a gallery-like atmosphere. The grand Mahalaya opening ceremony at Eden Gardens set the tone, where 3,000 drones created spectacular formations of Goddess Durga in the night sky, accompanied by a 3D projection mapping show. This blend of ancient chants and futuristic visuals demonstrates a festival that is confidently looking forward.
Where Old and New Converge
The most exciting pandals are those where this fusion is seamless. Imagine a traditionally sculpted idol of Durga, whose story is then told through an animated light-and-sound show on the walls around her. At Santosh Mitra Square, a moving train replica and a light show tell the story of 'Vande Mataram'. The 'Sodhon' theme at Rajdanga Naba Uday Sangha, inspired by the film 'Avatar', uses elaborate light installations and organic, tree-like structures to build a futuristic world, all while housing a traditional Durga idol at its core. These are not instances of technology replacing craft, but rather collaborating with it. Digital art, LED screens, and even AI-inspired visuals are providing a new language for artisans to express timeless stories, attracting bigger crowds and creating viral social media moments.
The Artisan in the Age of Technology
This evolving landscape presents both opportunities and questions for the artisans. While some fear that technology might overshadow manual skill, many are embracing the change. Artists skilled in traditional idol-making are now also applying their craft to durable fibreglass sculptures, which are increasingly used for decorative installations and allow for year-round income beyond the festival season. The fusion creates new roles: the light designer, the drone choreographer, the 4K animation creator. The collaboration ensures that while the tools may be modern, the soul of the creation—the artistic vision and devotional core—remains deeply rooted in human hands and heritage. The result is a Durga Puja that is more inclusive and dynamic, speaking to a new generation while honouring the ancestors.
