For years, Visakhapatnam—or Vizag, as it's affectionately known—has built its reputation on the back of its stunning beaches. The bustling Ramakrishna Beach (RK Beach), with its unique Submarine Museum (INS Kursura), offers a blend of recreation and history
right in the city's heart. A little further out, Rushikonda Beach beckons adventure lovers with opportunities for water sports against a backdrop of golden sands and green hills. These coastal attractions are the city's calling card, drawing millions of visitors who come to stroll along the promenades, enjoy the sea breeze, and witness spectacular sunrises over the Bay of Bengal. This seaside identity is strong and well-loved, but it only tells part of the city's story.
History, Hills, and Hidden Treasures
Beyond the sound of the waves lies a city steeped in history and cradled by nature. The ancient Simhachalam temple, dedicated to Lord Narasimha, stands as a testament to the region's deep spiritual roots and architectural prowess. For history buffs, the area is dotted with remnants of a rich Buddhist past, including the excavated monastic complex at Thotlakonda and the stupas of Bavikonda. Nature lovers can venture into the Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary for a trek or explore the million-year-old Borra Caves in the nearby Ananthagiri hills, known for their stunning limestone formations. The scenic journey to the Araku Valley, a hill station renowned for its coffee plantations and tribal culture, offers another dimension to the Vizag experience, attracting lakhs of domestic tourists annually.
A New Blueprint for Tourism
Recognising this untapped potential, authorities are now drafting ambitious plans to transform Vizag into a multifaceted tourism hub. A key proposal is the creation of an integrated eco-tourism circuit, dubbed the 'Green Triangle', that connects Kailasagiri Hill, Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, and Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary. This initiative aims to offer a seamless 'sea to forest' experience, potentially including a night safari modelled on successful international attractions. The Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) is spearheading this project, which focuses on conserving wildlife while providing modern facilities and unique visitor experiences like eco-friendly night stays. The goal is to unify these currently separate attractions into a single, world-class destination.
Expanding the Horizon
The plans extend far beyond the Green Triangle. Under the state's new tourism policy and the central government's Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme, both Visakhapatnam and the nearby Araku Valley have been identified as 'anchor hubs' for development. This involves significant investment in a wide range of tourism experiences, including heritage, wellness, and adventure tourism. Projects being discussed include upgrading the Borra Caves to international standards with modern lighting and amenities, developing a hospitality district along the coast, and creating a cultural hub near the Thotlakonda Buddhist site. The development of the Bhogapuram International Airport is also expected to be a major catalyst, making the entire region more accessible to both domestic and international travellers.
