The Game-Changer: UPI on Credit Cards
For years, UPI payments were directly linked to bank accounts, offering convenience but zero rewards. That changed when the Reserve Bank of India allowed RuPay credit cards to be linked with UPI applications like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm. This simple
but powerful integration means your UPI payments can now be charged to your credit card, allowing you to earn reward points on transactions that were previously unrewarded. Instead of your bank account being debited, the amount is charged to your credit limit, giving you an interest-free period for repayment while you accumulate points on everything from your morning coffee to your grocery shopping.
Choosing the Right Card is Everything
Not all credit cards are created equal in the UPI rewards game. The key is to select a RuPay credit card that not only offers points on UPI transactions but also provides a favourable conversion rate to airline miles. Cards generally fall into two categories: airline co-branded cards and general travel cards. Co-branded cards, like those with Vistara or Air India, deposit miles directly into your frequent flyer account. General travel cards, such as the Axis Bank ATLAS or HDFC Diners Club Black, accumulate points in the bank's reward program, which can then be transferred to multiple airline partners. For example, the Tata Neu Infinity HDFC Bank Card offers 1.5% back as NeuCoins on UPI spends via the Tata Neu app, while others might offer a flat reward rate on all UPI merchant payments. However, be aware that many cards have monthly caps on the number of points you can earn from UPI spends.
The Art of Points-to-Miles Conversion
Earning points is only half the battle; the real value is unlocked during redemption. Converting bank reward points to airline miles often provides significantly more value than redeeming them for cashback or vouchers. The process typically involves logging into your credit card’s net banking portal, navigating to the rewards section, and selecting the airline transfer partner. Each bank has a different set of airline partners and transfer ratios. For instance, a premium HDFC Bank card might allow you to transfer 10 reward points for 4 miles with Singapore Airlines or British Airways. Axis Bank's EDGE Miles program has its own set of partners and ratios. To maximise value, it's crucial to understand these ratios and transfer points only when you have a specific flight redemption in mind. A business class ticket that costs lakhs could become attainable for a fraction of that in points value.
A Sample Strategy in Action
Let's imagine you spend ₹40,000 monthly on UPI-eligible merchant transactions using a travel-focused RuPay credit card that gives you 2 points per ₹100 spent. That’s 800 points per month, or 9,600 points a year, just from your regular UPI expenses. Now, assume your card has a points transfer ratio of 2 bank points to 1 airline mile. This translates to 4,800 air miles annually. While this alone might not secure an international flight, it could be enough for a one-way domestic ticket on certain routes, especially during sales. When combined with a welcome bonus, milestone benefits, and rewards from other non-UPI spending on the same card, your path to a free flight becomes much shorter. The key is consistency and directing all possible spends through this optimised channel.
Read the Fine Print: Caps and Exclusions
Before you dive in, be aware of the limitations. Most banks impose a monthly cap on the number of reward points you can earn specifically from UPI transactions; a common limit is 500 points per month per category. Furthermore, certain merchant categories like rent payments, wallet loads, fuel, and utilities might be excluded from earning rewards altogether. Always read the terms and conditions of your specific card to understand its reward structure, earning caps, and excluded categories. Some cards may also have annual fees, although these are often waived if you meet a certain spending threshold. The goal is to ensure the value of the rewards you earn outweighs any fees you might pay.
