The Crucial Question: Is India Participating?
As of late August 2026, India is not on the list of countries participating in this pilot program. This means that applicants at U.S. consular posts in Chennai, Mumbai, Hyderabad, New Delhi, and Kolkata cannot currently use the $750 paid expedite option. The program launched at posts in Mexico, Canada, Colombia, Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Honduras. The State Department has indicated that additional locations may be added during the pilot period, so applicants should monitor the official U.S. Travel Docs website for any updates. For now, however, Indian applicants must continue to use the regular appointment system.
How the Process Works at Participating Posts
For applicants in participating countries, the process involves several steps. First, an applicant must complete the standard visa application and pay the $185 MRV fee. After that, they must schedule a regular interview for a future date. Only then, by logging into their account on the visa scheduling website, can they check for the “Paid Expedite” option. If the option is available and selected, the applicant has just 10 minutes to pay the $750 fee to secure the earlier appointment, which is typically scheduled within 10 business days. This window is tight, and failure to pay within the time limit means the slot is lost.
Important Limitations and What the Fee Does Not Cover
It is critical to understand what this $750 fee does and does not do. It only provides access to an earlier interview appointment. It does not guarantee visa approval, accelerate the processing time after the interview, or reduce the stringent eligibility and security screening every applicant must undergo. An applicant who pays for an earlier slot is subject to the exact same vetting process as a standard applicant. Furthermore, the $750 fee is strictly non-refundable. If you miss your paid expedited appointment, you forfeit the fee and cannot reschedule it.
Is It a Good Option for Future Consideration?
Should this program expand to India, applicants will need to weigh the high cost against their urgency. For a business professional needing to attend a sudden conference or someone facing a time-sensitive family matter, the $935 total cost ($185 MRV + $750 expedite) might be a worthwhile expense for the convenience and certainty of an earlier date. However, for routine tourism or non-urgent travel, the standard application process remains the most economical choice.
