Serving Size vs. Protein Per Serving
The first thing to check is the serving size, which is not standardized across brands. One brand might have a 30g scoop, while another has a 45g scoop, yet both could claim 24g of protein. The key is to calculate the protein efficiency. Divide the grams
of protein by the total serving size in grams. For example, if a 30.4g scoop provides 24g of protein, the efficiency is about 79%. A high-quality product should ideally have a protein content of 75-80% or more by weight, which indicates it has fewer fillers. If the percentage is low, you're paying for more than just protein.
Know Your Whey: Concentrate, Isolate, or Hydrolysate
The most common protein is whey, which comes in three main forms determined by the level of filtration. Whey Concentrate (WPC) is the least processed, containing about 70-80% protein, with the rest being fats and carbohydrates, including lactose. It's the best all-around option for beginners on a budget who tolerate dairy well. Whey Isolate (WPI) undergoes more filtering to remove most of the fat and lactose, resulting in a purer product with 90% or more protein. It's a great choice if you are lactose intolerant or watching your calorie intake. Whey Hydrolysate (WPH) is 'pre-digested,' meaning the protein is broken down for the fastest absorption. It's the easiest on the stomach but also the most expensive, typically preferred by professional athletes.
Scan the Ingredients for Fillers and Red Flags
The ingredient list tells you what's really in the tub, and items are listed in descending order by weight. The protein source (like 'Whey Protein Isolate') should be the very first ingredient. If you see sugar, maltodextrin (a carbohydrate filler), or gums high on the list, the product prioritizes bulk over quality. These fillers are used to improve texture or cut costs but offer no nutritional benefit and can sometimes cause bloating or digestive issues. Also, be wary of 'proprietary blends'. This term allows manufacturers to hide the exact amount of each ingredient, meaning a product could contain mostly cheaper proteins with only a trace of the premium ones advertised.
The Deceptive Practice of 'Amino Spiking'
A dishonest tactic to watch out for is 'amino spiking' or 'protein spiking'. This is when manufacturers add cheap, low-grade amino acids like glycine and taurine to the powder. Standard protein tests measure total nitrogen content, and since all amino acids contain nitrogen, these fillers can artificially inflate the protein number on the label. However, these non-essential amino acids do not contribute to muscle protein synthesis the way a complete protein does. You end up paying for a lower quality product that is less effective. A transparent brand will often provide a full amino acid profile on the label, showing the amounts of essential amino acids like Leucine, Isoleucine, and Valine (BCAAs).
Check for Authenticity and FSSAI Approval
In the Indian market, checking for authenticity is crucial. Recent studies have highlighted that many supplements sold in India have misleading labels, with some containing only half the protein claimed. To protect yourself, always look for the FSSAI logo and the 14-digit license number on the package. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India sets guidelines to ensure products are safe, accurately labeled, and free from contaminants like heavy metals or banned substances. Many reputable brands also include a QR code or a unique code on the tub that you can use on their website to verify the product's authenticity.
