A New Era of Connectivity
For decades, reaching Srinagar by land meant a long and often arduous road journey on National Highway 44, subject to weather and traffic delays. The launch of the Vande Bharat service on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) marks a historic
moment for Indian infrastructure and tourism. This all-weather train provides a fast, safe, and comfortable alternative, cutting the travel time between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar to under five hours. The service, which became fully operational in the first half of 2026, has been met with huge demand, with trains reportedly running at full occupancy since their launch. In response to this popularity, Indian Railways has already approved a third Vande Bharat train for the route to increase capacity.
The Route: Across an Engineering Marvel
The journey is as spectacular as the destination. The train traverses the ambitious USBRL project, which includes some of India's most impressive engineering feats. The route connects Jammu Tawi to Srinagar, with key stops at Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan Udhampur, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Reasi, and Banihal. The highlight of the journey is crossing the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge, soaring 359 metres above the riverbed — making it taller than the Eiffel Tower. The train also passes through numerous tunnels, including the Pir Panjal tunnel, as it carves its way through the rugged Himalayan terrain. Thanks to recent approvals, the train can now reach speeds of up to 100 kmph on the crucial Katra-Banihal section.
Schedule and Timings
Currently, two pairs of Vande Bharat trains operate between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar daily, except for Tuesdays. The morning service, train number 26401, departs Jammu Tawi at 6:20 AM and arrives in Srinagar at 11:10 AM. The return service, train 26402, leaves Srinagar at 2:00 PM, reaching Jammu Tawi by 6:50 PM. A second service also runs on the route. The journey covers the 269-kilometre distance in approximately 4 hours and 45-50 minutes. The new, third service (train numbers 26407/26408) will add more options for travellers once its schedule is announced. Always double-check the latest timings on the official IRCTC website before your travel date, as schedules can be subject to seasonal changes.
Booking Your Journey: Fares and Tips
Booking your tickets for the Srinagar Vande Bharat is straightforward. You can book seats online through the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in) or its Rail Connect mobile app. The train offers two classes of travel: AC Chair Car (CC) and Executive Chair Car (EC). As of mid-2026, fares for the AC Chair Car started at approximately ₹715, while the Executive Chair Car was priced around ₹1,320. Given the high demand for this route, it is highly advisable to book your tickets well in advance, especially if you are planning to travel during peak tourist seasons like summer (April-June) or autumn (September-October). The trains are specially designed for the cold climate, with features like advanced heating systems to ensure a comfortable journey even in winter.
Planning Your Kashmir Trip
Once you arrive at Srinagar Railway Station, you can easily find taxis and local transport to reach your hotel or houseboat. The station is well-connected to the main city areas, including Dal Lake. The best time to visit depends on what you want to experience. For snow, plan your trip in February. For lush green valleys, the spring and summer months are ideal. Once in Srinagar, don't miss the iconic shikara ride on Dal Lake, visiting the Mughal Gardens (Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh), and exploring the old city. The train makes it easier than ever to plan onward journeys to other famous destinations like Gulmarg and Pahalgam, which are accessible by road from Srinagar. This new rail link opens up a world of possibilities for exploring the entire Kashmir Valley with greater ease and comfort.
