Lohagad Fort: The Beginner’s Classic
Often called the “Iron Fort,” Lohagad is one of the most accessible and popular monsoon treks, making it ideal for beginners and families. Located near Lonavala, the trek to the top is relatively easy, with well-laid stone steps leading you up the hill.
The climb from the base village of Lohagadwadi takes about an hour. During the monsoon, the fort is draped in thick fog and vibrant green moss, with small waterfalls cascading down its sides. The main attraction is the 'Vinchu Kata' or scorpion's tail, a long, narrow fortified spur that offers breathtaking, though often misty, views of the Pawna reservoir and the surrounding valley. Given its popularity, it can get crowded on weekends, so a weekday visit is recommended for a quieter experience.
Rajgad Fort: The King of Forts
For those seeking a more challenging adventure steeped in history, Rajgad is the ultimate destination. As the first capital of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj for nearly 25 years, this fort holds immense historical significance. The name “Rajgad” literally means “King of Forts,” and its vast expanse lives up to the title. Located about 60 km from Pune, the trek is considered moderate in difficulty, taking around 2.5 to 3.5 hours to ascend, depending on the route chosen. The fort has three distinct plateaus (machis) — Padmavati, Suvela, and Sanjevani — and a central citadel (Balekilla) that offers panoramic views of neighboring forts like Torna and Sinhagad. The monsoon transforms its expansive plateaus into a carpet of green, offering a truly majestic experience for seasoned trekkers.
Visapur Fort: The Waterfall Trail
The twin fort of Lohagad, Visapur offers a unique and thrilling monsoon trekking experience. What sets Visapur apart is its famous waterfall trail, where trekkers get to climb up a path with water flowing over the steps, creating a natural staircase of cascades. This makes it an incredibly popular and photogenic trek, especially between July and September. The trek is considered moderate and takes about two hours to reach the summit. At a higher elevation than Lohagad, Visapur Fort provides spectacular views of its twin, the surrounding valleys, and a large plateau at the top with ancient ruins and water cisterns to explore. It's an adventurous alternative for those who have already conquered Lohagad and are looking for a bit more excitement.
Torna Fort: The Highest Challenge
Known as Prachandagad, or the “Massive Fort,” Torna is the highest hill fort in the Pune district, standing tall at an altitude of 4,603 feet. This was the first fort captured by a 16-year-old Shivaji Maharaj, marking the beginning of the Maratha Empire. The trek is graded as moderate to difficult, with a steep and rocky ascent that demands good stamina and endurance. The climb from the base village of Velhe takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. In the monsoon, the journey is rewarded with spectacular views of lush landscapes, dense fog, and vibrant wildflowers. Once at the top, you can explore its vast area, including the Zunjar and Budhla machis, making it a fulfilling adventure for experienced trekkers looking to push their limits.
Safety and Essentials for Your Trek
While the monsoon enhances the beauty of these forts, it also makes the trails slippery and challenging. Always prioritize safety. Wear trekking shoes with a good grip, as regular sports shoes are often inadequate for wet, rocky paths. Carry a lightweight rain jacket or poncho, and protect your electronics in waterproof bags. It's essential to pack enough water and high-energy snacks, as you may not find vendors at the top. Always check the weather forecast before you leave and inform someone about your trek plan. For more challenging routes, it’s advisable to go with an experienced group. Respect the heritage of these sites by not littering and preserving their natural beauty for everyone to enjoy.
