There's a significant difference between sleep duration—the number of hours you're in bed—and the subjective feeling of being restored upon waking. This feeling is what researchers call “perceived sleep restfulness.” You can get eight hours of sleep and still
feel groggy, while another person might feel fantastic after seven. This subjective quality is a meaningful indicator of sleep health, and studies are increasingly showing that exercise plays a crucial role in enhancing it, sometimes more than it affects objective sleep metrics like time spent in different sleep stages.
Intentional Exercise vs. Daily Movement
Interestingly, a recent large-scale study of over 700,000 adults in Japan found that structured, regular exercise was strongly associated with feeling more rested. People who started a new exercise habit saw a 37% higher likelihood of improved sleep restfulness, while those who maintained their routine saw a 23% boost. In contrast, general daily physical activity—like total steps taken throughout the day—did not show a consistent link to better restfulness. This suggests that intentional workouts, which raise your heart rate and challenge your body, are more impactful for sleep quality than simply being on your feet.
How Movement Improves Rest
Several mechanisms explain why exercise promotes more restorative sleep. Physical activity helps regulate the body's internal clock, or circadian rhythm, which tells your body when to be alert and when to wind down. Aerobic exercise, in particular, has been shown to increase the amount of slow-wave or “deep” sleep, which is critical for physical and mental rejuvenation. Exercise also helps de-stress the mind and can reduce symptoms of anxiety, which are often major barriers to restful sleep. Finally, a workout raises your core body temperature, and the subsequent drop a few hours later can help trigger sleepiness, making it easier to drift off.
Does Timing or Type Matter?
The type of exercise you do can make a difference. Aerobic activities like running, swimming, and cycling are consistently linked to better sleep. Strength training has also been found to improve sleep efficiency. When it comes to timing, the conventional wisdom to avoid evening workouts has been challenged. Many studies now show that moderate exercise in the evening does not disrupt sleep for most people and may even help them fall asleep faster, as long as it's not a high-intensity session within 90 minutes of bedtime. Morning or afternoon exercise can help by promoting an earlier release of the sleep hormone melatonin. Ultimately, the best time to exercise is the time you can stick with consistently.
Consistency Is Your Best Bet
The key takeaway from the growing body of research is that consistency is more important than any single factor. Establishing a regular workout routine helps regulate your body’s systems over the long term. The World Health Organization recommends 150-300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week, which could be broken down into 30-minute sessions five days a week. Even small, frequent bouts of exercise, such as 10 minutes of moderate activity daily, have been shown to make a positive difference in sleep quality for young adults. The goal is to build a habit that signals to your body that it's time for activity and, later, time for deep, restorative rest.
