The Rise of the Accommodation-First Holiday
The traditional travel script is being flipped. According to the 'How India Travels 2026 – The Homes Edit' report by Booking.com and VIDEC Consultants, the choice of stay is no longer an afterthought but the centrepiece of the entire trip. This trend,
dubbed 'stay-led travel', sees travellers choosing their lodging first and letting that decision guide their destination and activities. The report highlights that alternative accommodations like vacation rentals, apartments, and homestays are moving from a niche preference to a mainstream choice. Statistics show a significant turn towards this mindset, with 87% of travellers believing alternative stays help create more meaningful memories, and 85% choosing them for more authentic local experiences. The stay is no longer just a place to sleep; it has become the destination itself.
From a Bed to an Experience
What’s driving this change is a desire for more than just comfort and convenience. Modern Indian travellers are seeking unique, immersive experiences that a standard hotel room might not offer. Think of waking up in a restored heritage haveli in Rajasthan, spending a weekend in a houseboat on the Kerala backwaters, or working remotely from a chic cottage overlooking a tea plantation in Munnar. These accommodations are packed with character and offer built-in activities. A farm stay might offer lessons in organic farming, a colonial-era mansion could provide guided history tours, and a desert camp in Jaisalmer comes with camel safaris and cultural performances under the stars. The property itself becomes a source of entertainment, relaxation, and cultural connection, shaping the very soul of the adventure.
How Your Stay Designs Your Itinerary
When the accommodation is the main attraction, the daily itinerary naturally builds around it. A Booking.com report from the previous year noted that 80% of Indian travellers planned to spend most of their vacation time within the property, a figure far exceeding the global average. This transforms how holidays are structured. Choosing a wellness retreat automatically fills the schedule with yoga, meditation, and spa treatments. Opting for a wildlife lodge on the edge of Ranthambore National Park means the daily rhythm is dictated by sunrise and sunset safaris. This approach allows for a deeper, more unhurried exploration of a single theme, whether it's relaxation, adventure, or cultural immersion. The stay dictates the pace and the activities, leading to a more cohesive and fulfilling travel experience.
The 'Why' Behind the Shift
Several factors are fuelling this accommodation-first mindset. The rise of remote work has blurred the lines between living and travelling, with 'workations' becoming common. Business travellers, too, are increasingly choosing alternative stays, with 41% citing the need for more space, like a separate bedroom or workspace, as a key motivator. There's also a strong desire for authenticity and creating shareable, memorable moments. Social media plays a role, inspiring travellers with visually stunning and unique properties. Furthermore, this trend caters to practical needs. For families and groups, alternative accommodations often offer better value and more space to be together, a factor for 83% of travellers. The growth is also expanding beyond traditional tourist hubs, with cities like Indore, Ayodhya, and Ghaziabad seeing a boom in listings, bringing new destinations into focus.
