The Route and Best Time to Travel
The drive from Gokarna to Murdeshwar and onward to Karwar primarily follows the scenic National Highway 66 (NH-66). This highway is the main artery connecting the coastal towns of Karnataka, offering glimpses of estuaries, fishing villages, and dense
greenery. While road widening work has been ongoing, the route is generally well-maintained and provides a smooth driving experience for the most part. The ideal time for this road trip is during the winter months, from October to February. During this period, the weather is pleasant with clear skies and lower humidity, making it perfect for beach activities and sightseeing. The monsoon season (June to September) offers lush landscapes but can bring heavy rainfall, while the summer (March to May) can be hot and humid.
Starting Point: Spiritual and Serene Gokarna
Begin your journey in Gokarna, a town famous for its unique blend of sacred pilgrimage and laid-back beach culture. It is home to the ancient Mahabaleshwar Temple, a significant site for Hindus that houses the revered Atma Linga. After soaking in the spiritual atmosphere, head to its world-renowned beaches. Kudle Beach and Om Beach are the most popular, offering golden sands and a variety of cafes. For the more adventurous, a trek or a short boat ride can take you to the more secluded Half Moon and Paradise beaches. A drive of about 80 kilometres south from Gokarna brings you to Murdeshwar, a town dominated by the world's second-tallest statue of Lord Shiva, standing at a magnificent 123 feet. The statue is perched on Kanduka Hill, with the Arabian Sea framing it on three sides, creating a breathtaking spectacle. The adjacent Murdeshwar Temple, with its towering 20-storey Raja Gopura, is another architectural marvel. An elevator ride to the top of the gopura offers panoramic views of the colossal statue and the coastline. The temple's history is deeply connected to the legend of the Atma Linga from the Ramayana, making it a place of immense mythological significance. From Murdeshwar, head north past Gokarna to Karwar, a serene port city near the Goa border. Situated at the confluence of the Kali River and the Arabian Sea, Karwar is known for its calm, unspoiled beaches and lush green hills. Rabindranath Tagore Beach, named after the poet who found inspiration here, is a must-visit, complete with a Warship Museum and a rock garden. For a quieter experience, head to Devbagh Beach or take a boat trip to Kurumgad Island. The area is also a great place for dolphin spotting, a popular activity for tourists year-round. Karwar's unique geography provides a natural harbour and a tranquil end to your coastal exploration.
