Why Temperature Is a Liar
Our first instinct when checking the weather is to look at the temperature. But in a humid climate like India's during monsoon, the simple Celsius or Fahrenheit reading is a deeply flawed measure of how dangerous the heat actually is. The real story is told
by the combination of heat and humidity, often expressed as the Heat Index or 'feels like' temperature. High humidity prevents your sweat from evaporating, which is your body's primary way of cooling down. When sweat can't evaporate, the heat stays trapped in your body, leading to increased strain and a higher risk of heat exhaustion or heatstroke, even at temperatures that might not seem extreme on their own.
The Critical Role of Humidity
Think of the air like a sponge. On a dry day, the sponge is empty and can easily soak up moisture—your sweat. On a humid monsoon day, the sponge is already saturated. It can't absorb much more. Your body keeps producing sweat, but it just drips off without providing the cooling effect of evaporation. This is why you feel sticky and constantly overheated. The moisture-laden air, a hallmark of the Indian monsoon, essentially short-circuits your internal air conditioning system, forcing your heart to work harder to pump blood to the skin in a desperate attempt to cool down. This elevated strain is particularly dangerous for the elderly, children, and those with cardiovascular conditions.
Understanding Wet-Bulb Temperature
An even more critical, though less-known, metric is the 'wet-bulb temperature' (WBT). This measurement simulates the cooling effect of evaporation on a wet surface and represents the lowest temperature your body can possibly reach through sweating in the given conditions. When the wet-bulb temperature gets too high, human beings literally lose the ability to cool themselves. Scientists consider a wet-bulb temperature of 35°C the absolute limit of human survivability for more than a few hours, even for a healthy person resting in the shade. Worryingly, recent studies show that dangerous impacts can occur at much lower WBT values, and parts of India are increasingly experiencing these life-threatening conditions during humid heatwaves.
The Urban Heat Trap
Cities are significantly hotter than surrounding rural areas, a phenomenon known as the Urban Heat Island effect. Concrete, asphalt, and dense buildings absorb and retain far more solar radiation than natural landscapes. In Indian cities, this effect is amplified during the monsoon. The combination of trapped heat from urban surfaces and high ambient humidity creates a potent, dangerous mix. The lack of green spaces and the dense concentration of buildings also block wind, preventing heat from dissipating and further worsening the feeling of oppressive heat for millions of urban dwellers.
When Nights Offer No Relief
One of the most dangerous aspects of monsoon heat is the lack of nighttime cooling. Your body needs lower overnight temperatures to recover from the heat stress accumulated during the day. However, the same humidity and cloud cover that trap heat during the day prevent it from escaping at night. Cities, with their heat-retaining materials, are particularly bad at cooling down. When night temperatures remain high, your body stays in a state of continuous physiological stress, day after day. This cumulative strain significantly increases the risk of severe health outcomes, especially for vulnerable individuals.
Who Is Most at Risk?
While everyone is affected, some groups are more vulnerable to humid heat. Outdoor workers, such as construction and agricultural laborers, are at extreme risk due to prolonged exposure. The elderly, whose bodies may not regulate temperature as efficiently, are also highly susceptible. Other at-risk groups include young children, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic health conditions like heart disease, respiratory issues, and diabetes. It's crucial for these individuals and their caregivers to be extra vigilant and take proactive steps to stay cool.
