A Landmark Collaboration
In a significant move for Indian higher education, professional services firm EY and Delhi University's prestigious Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) have launched a new initiative called AI VIBE (Varsity for Innovation, Business and Economics). Announced
in August 2026 to mark SRCC's centenary year, this 12-month program is designed to equip commerce and economics students with critical skills for an AI-driven economy. The EY-sponsored course will be offered at no cost to a select cohort of 100 undergraduate and postgraduate students, starting from their third semester. The selection process is rigorous, involving assessments, interviews, and a statement of purpose, indicating the high value placed on the program. The initiative aims to bridge the gap between traditional classroom learning and the practical AI skills that are increasingly required in the modern workplace.
Why AI in a Commerce College?
The collaboration between an accounting and consulting leader and a top commerce college is telling. It confirms a major shift: AI is no longer a domain exclusive to engineers and data scientists. A recent EY report highlighted that AI is set to significantly reshape employment patterns, especially in India's IT and business services sectors. Roles in finance, accounting, and business analytics are rapidly evolving. Routine tasks like data entry, invoice processing, and basic financial reporting are being automated. This doesn't mean accountants or finance professionals will be replaced; rather, their roles are being elevated. The focus is shifting from manual data handling to higher-value work like interpreting AI-generated insights, strategic decision-making, and advising on financial anomalies flagged by automated systems. The SRCC-EY partnership is a direct response to this trend, preparing future business leaders to work with, not against, intelligent systems.
The New Skill Set for Business Leaders
The AI VIBE curriculum provides a roadmap of the skills now considered essential. The program covers a wide array of topics, including machine learning, Generative AI, data analytics, decision intelligence, and financial technologies (fintech). Crucially, it extends beyond technical skills. The inclusion of modules on 'Responsible AI' and 'AI Governance' shows the growing importance of ethical considerations in deploying artificial intelligence in business. This blended approach, combining technical know-how with business problem-solving, is what employers are increasingly looking for. The program's structure—featuring hackathons, industry mentorship from EY specialists, and project-based learning—underscores that theoretical knowledge alone is no longer sufficient. Students need hands-on experience with real-world business challenges.
Beyond Buzzwords: Actionable Skills for Students
For any commerce student, the key takeaway is the need to build a portfolio of AI-adjacent skills. The first is 'AI Literacy': understanding what AI can and cannot do in a business context, without needing to become a programmer. This involves familiarity with common AI tools used for data analysis and visualization, such as Power BI and Tableau. The second is 'Data Fluency', which is the ability to interpret data, ask the right questions, and critically evaluate the outputs of AI systems. Instead of just creating a spreadsheet, the valuable skill is now analyzing the forecast generated by an AI model. Finally, 'Business Acumen' remains paramount. AI tools are powerful, but they lack the human judgment needed for strategic planning, ethical oversight, and complex problem-solving. The most valuable professionals will be those who can combine their core commerce knowledge with the ability to effectively leverage AI tools to drive business outcomes.
