The previous system could handle around 4 lakh passenger enquiries per minute, a number that sounds large but was frequently overwhelmed by the massive, simultaneous demand during peak booking hours for festivals and holidays. This bottleneck created an environment where speed was everything, often leaving regular users competing with automated scripts and organised agents.
The 10x Leap in Capacity
The headline-grabbing figure is the new system's ability to handle more than 40 lakh enquiries per minute—a staggering tenfold increase. This monumental jump is the core of the upgrade. An 'enquiry' isn't just a booking; it includes checking seat availability, PNR status, waitlist positions, and fare details. By dramatically expanding this capacity, the system is less likely to get bogged down by the sheer volume of users browsing for information, which in turn frees up resources for the actual booking process. This overhaul is part of a comprehensive modernisation of the nearly 40-year-old PRS, moving it to a more robust, cloud-based platform developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS).
Beyond Enquiries: Faster Bookings
While handling more enquiries is crucial, the ultimate goal is to make booking a ticket faster and more reliable. The upgrade delivers here as well. The new platform is designed to process over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute, a nearly five-fold increase from the previous capacity of about 32,000 bookings per minute. This means that even when a million people are trying to book at the same time, the system has a much better chance of processing transactions smoothly without crashing. For passengers, this translates into a less stressful booking experience, with a higher probability of securing a ticket during high-demand windows. Early data from the beta version of the new IRCTC website, which went live in July 2026, already shows a noticeable improvement in the number of Tatkal tickets successfully booked within the first few minutes.
