Southern Railway has launched Tamil Nadu's first Vistadome coach service, attaching the special carriage to the Madurai-Guruvayur Express. This trial run, which begins today, is set to redefine rail tourism in the region by offering an immersive travel

Vistadome coaches are specifically designed for sightseeing, featuring large glass windows, a transparent glass roof, and an observation lounge that provides an uninterrupted, panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. Manufactured in India, these coaches aim to blend the comfort of train travel with the beauty of nature, making the journey itself the destination. This initiative follows the success of similar coaches on picturesque routes across the country, like the Araku Valley and the Kalka-Shimla Railway.
The Inaugural Route and Schedule
The new Executive AC Vistadome coach will be part of the Madurai-Guruvayur Express (16327/16328). The highlight of this journey is the spectacular Sengottai-Punalur ghat section, which cuts through the Western Ghats. Passengers will be treated to views of lush greenery, mountains, and the scenic Aryankavu Pass, which connects Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The trial service from Madurai begins on October 22, 2026, and will run until January 15, 2027. The Vistadome coach will be available on the Madurai-Guruvayur train on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. In the return direction from Guruvayur, the service will operate on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays, starting from October 23, 2026, to January 16, 2027.

The coach has a seating capacity of 44, and its most talked-about feature is the rotatable seats that can swing 180 degrees, allowing passengers to always face the direction of the view.
