Meet Dewi: The Embassy's New Digital Face
The Indian Embassy in Jakarta has launched a new initiative called Project Dewi, fronted by an artificial intelligence-powered avatar. Announced in mid-October, 'Dewi' is now the new digital face of the embassy, tasked with disseminating information and
strengthening public outreach. The launch was timed to coincide with the auspicious start of Navaratri and Durga Puja, adding a layer of cultural significance. Indian Ambassador to Indonesia, Sandeep Chakravorty, introduced Dewi as a guide for her followers, marking a new chapter in the embassy's communication strategy. The name itself is a masterstroke of cultural diplomacy; 'Dewi' derives from the Sanskrit word 'Devi' (goddess) and is also a common name in Indonesia, symbolizing the shared heritage between the two nations.
What Can The Avatar Do?
Dewi's primary role is to serve as a one-stop source of information for both the Indian diaspora and Indonesian citizens interested in India. Operating across the embassy's social media platforms, the avatar will provide updates on a wide range of topics. This includes consular services, visa information, Indian culture and heritage, travel and tourism opportunities in India, and details on scholarships for students. Furthermore, Dewi will be a source for business and investment prospects, aiming to bring the India-Indonesia partnership closer to the public. The embassy's social media posts encouraged users to 'say Halo to Dewi', framing the avatar as an approachable and friendly guide to 'stay informed and stay connected'.
Why Use An Avatar for Diplomacy?
The adoption of an AI avatar is a strategic move to modernize public service delivery and outreach. The embassy stated that the initiative is inspired by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for using emerging technologies to improve governance. By moving beyond conventional communication methods, the embassy aims to make information more engaging, accessible, and relevant to a wider audience. An AI avatar can operate 24/7, handle a large volume of common queries simultaneously, and connect with a younger, tech-savvy demographic. This digital approach allows the embassy to serve its community more efficiently, freeing up human staff to handle more complex consular and diplomatic issues. The initiative marks a significant step in India's digital diplomacy, positioning the Jakarta mission as a pioneer in using AI for public engagement.
Serving the Indian Community in Indonesia
The Dewi project is tailored to the needs of a substantial Indian community in Indonesia. According to the Indian mission, the country is home to approximately 130,000 Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and around 15,000 Non-Resident Indians (NRIs). Many members of this community are professionals, working as engineers, teachers, and chartered accountants in Jakarta and other major cities. Active regional and pan-Indian community associations also form a core part of the diaspora's social fabric. Project Dewi is designed to keep these communities informed and connected to the embassy, providing a direct and modern channel for essential information that affects their daily lives, from consular updates to cultural events.
A Glimpse into the Future of Embassies
The launch of Dewi is more than just a local initiative; it's a potential blueprint for the future of diplomatic missions worldwide. As governments embrace digitalization, the use of AI for consular assistance and public diplomacy is a logical next step. While External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has called for responsible discussions around AI, initiatives like Dewi show its practical application in serving citizens abroad. The project reflects the broader 'Act East' policy, under which the India-Indonesia relationship in commercial, cultural, and political spheres has grown significantly. The success of this AI avatar in Jakarta will be closely watched by other Indian embassies and foreign missions as a test case for leveraging technology to build stronger, more resilient connections with diaspora communities.
