The initial panic that students would simply use tools like ChatGPT to write entire essays is giving way to a more sophisticated understanding. While academic dishonesty remains a concern, many students and educators are moving from a mindset of restriction
to one of responsible integration. The conversation is evolving from whether AI should be used, to how it can be used ethically to enhance learning. Instead of asking AI for the final answer, a growing number of students are using it as an interactive tutor. They prompt it to act as a Socratic guide, asking leading questions to help them uncover solutions on their own. This method encourages them to reason through problems, identify gaps in their knowledge, and build a genuine understanding of the material rather than simply borrowing a conclusion.
The New Study Group: How AI is Used
So what does an AI 'study partner' look like in practice? It's a versatile assistant available 24/7. Students use it to break down complex topics into simpler terms, much like asking a teacher for clarification after class. They can upload class notes and ask the AI to generate practice questions or flashcards for revision. This transforms passive review into an active learning session. For writing, AI serves as an excellent brainstorming partner, helping to generate ideas, create outlines, or overcome writer's block. It can also function as a grammar and style coach, providing feedback on sentence structure and clarity, which helps students recognise patterns and improve their own writing skills over time. This approach positions AI not as a ghostwriter, but as a guide that supports the student's own intellectual effort.
Building Critical Digital Literacy
This evolving relationship requires a new set of skills. Rather than blindly trusting an AI's output, students are learning to become critical consumers of information. This means fact-checking the AI's suggestions, questioning its potential biases, and evaluating the quality of its responses. Using AI effectively becomes an exercise in critical thinking itself. Students must learn to write precise prompts, assess the AI-generated content, and synthesise it with their own knowledge. Educators and institutions are starting to recognise their role in fostering this AI literacy. Instead of outright bans, many are developing clear policies on acceptable use and teaching students how to engage with these tools responsibly. Some initiatives even involve students directly in creating these frameworks.
Navigating the Inevitable Risks
Despite the benefits, challenges remain. The primary risk is over-reliance, where the tool becomes a crutch that prevents students from developing foundational knowledge and critical thinking skills. AI models can also be factually incorrect or 'hallucinate' information, making it crucial for students to verify everything they receive. Furthermore, concerns about data privacy and the potential for algorithms to reinforce existing biases are very real. The goal for educators is not to eliminate these risks entirely—an impossible task—but to equip students with the awareness and skills to navigate them. This means teaching them to always remain the primary author of their work and to use AI to augment, not replace, their own thinking.
