The Big Shift: Credit Cards on UPI
For years, UPI payments and credit cards operated in separate worlds. UPI was for quick, small payments directly from your bank account, while credit cards were for larger purchases. That has changed. The introduction of RuPay credit cards on UPI platforms
has been a game-changer, blending the convenience of scanning a QR code with the benefits of using a credit card. This means you no longer have to choose between the ease of UPI and the rewards of a credit card; you can have both. This integration allows you to link an eligible RuPay credit card to your favourite UPI app, like GPay, PhonePe, or Paytm, and use it to pay merchants.
Why Your Bank Account UPI Fails to Earn Flights
When you use UPI linked to your savings account, you are simply transferring your own money. While incredibly convenient, these transactions do not come with reward programs designed for earning travel points. Banks offer reward points and air miles primarily on credit card spending as an incentive for using their credit line. Therefore, to start earning towards airline vouchers, your spending needs to be channelled through a credit instrument that has a partnership with airline loyalty programs. The key is to shift your UPI spending from your debit account to a credit card without losing the convenience of scanning a QR code.
The Secret Weapon: Co-Branded Travel Credit Cards
The entire strategy hinges on using the right kind of credit card: a co-branded travel credit card on the RuPay network. These cards are created through a partnership between a bank and an airline (like IndiGo, Vistara, or Air India) or a travel aggregator. Instead of generic cashback, these cards are specifically designed to reward you with airline miles or points for your spending. When you link a RuPay variant of one of these cards to your UPI app, every eligible merchant payment you make—be it at your local kirana store or for your online shopping—starts accumulating points that can be converted into flight vouchers. Cards like the ixigo AU Credit Card, Tata Neu Infinity HDFC Bank Credit Card, and others offered by major banks now come in RuPay variants, making them UPI-compatible.
How to Choose the Right Card for You
Not all cards are created equal. To maximize your earnings, consider these factors: 1. Airline Loyalty: Do you have a preferred airline? If you fly IndiGo frequently, a co-branded card like the IndiGo Kotak XL or IndiGo SBI Card makes sense as they accumulate points for that specific airline. 2. Reward Rate on UPI: Check the specific reward rate for UPI transactions. Some cards offer accelerated rewards on UPI, while others provide only the base rate. For example, some cards might offer 3% on UPI spends, while others offer a lower 1%. 3. Conversion Ratio: Understand how your credit card points convert to airline miles. A good conversion ratio is crucial for getting real value. For premium cards, this can be as good as 1:1, meaning one reward point equals one airline mile. For others, the value might be lower. 4. Annual Fees vs. Benefits: Weigh the annual fee against the welcome bonuses, complimentary lounge access, and other perks. Many cards waive the fee if you meet a certain annual spending threshold.
Step-by-Step: Linking Your Card to UPI
Setting this up is straightforward. First, ensure you have an eligible RuPay credit card. Then, follow these general steps in your preferred UPI app: 1. Open your UPI app (like GPay, PhonePe, Paytm). 2. Go to your profile or payment settings and find the option to 'Add Account' or 'Link Credit Card'. 3. Select 'RuPay Credit Card' from the options. 4. Choose your card-issuing bank from the list. 5. The app will detect your card linked to your registered mobile number. Select it and verify using the OTP sent to your phone. 6. Set a new UPI PIN specifically for your credit card transactions. This PIN will be used to authorise payments. Once linked, you can select your credit card as the payment source whenever you scan a merchant QR code.
Smart Spending: What to Pay and What to Avoid
To accumulate vouchers faster, you need to be strategic. Use your UPI-linked credit card for all eligible merchant payments. This includes everything from your morning coffee and groceries to utility bills and e-commerce purchases. However, be aware of the limitations. UPI on credit card is meant for payments to merchants (P2M transactions). You cannot use it for peer-to-peer (P2P) money transfers to friends or family, or for loading digital wallets. Attempting to do so may result in a failed transaction or even fees. Focus on consolidating all your retail spending through this channel to hit milestone bonuses and accelerate your reward accumulation.
