A Month of Missing Rain
The numbers from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) are stark. Throughout July 2026, Bengaluru's city observatory recorded a meagre 23 mm of rainfall. This figure is a dramatic departure from the typical 80 mm to 100 mm the city expects during
this peak monsoon month. The only time July has been drier in the last 108 years was in 1918, which saw just 18.5 mm. This dry spell came after a promising start to the season, with healthy pre-monsoon showers providing an initial surplus. However, the prolonged lack of rain in July has effectively weakened the southwest monsoon's performance over the region, raising alarms among citizens and officials alike.
Reservoirs Under Pressure
The immediate and most critical impact of a failed monsoon is on the city's water reservoirs. Bengaluru relies heavily on water from the Cauvery basin, and the lack of rain in the catchment areas has kept inflows dangerously low. As of late July, storage in the four major Cauvery basin reservoirs was approximately 42 percent lower than at the same time last year. According to the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), the city requires about 2.2 thousand million cubic feet (tmc) of water each month. Officials have warned that without significant rainfall, the current reserves might only last for another five to six months, creating a precarious situation for the sprawling metropolis. This has revived the conversation around water rationing and other conservation measures that were implemented during previous crises.
Beyond Just Rainfall Totals
This year's experience is forcing a critical shift in how the monsoon's success is measured. The headline statistic of rainfall deficit, while alarming, only tells part of the story. The real checklist for water security includes factors like reservoir levels, groundwater recharge, and soil moisture. Even when rain does fall, Bengaluru's rapid and often unplanned urbanization presents another challenge. Widespread concretization prevents rainwater from seeping into the ground to replenish depleted aquifers. Experts argue that even with erratic rainfall patterns, better management of urban lakes and a focus on rainwater harvesting could significantly improve the city's resilience. The dry July underscores that it's not just about how much rain falls from the sky, but how much is effectively captured and stored.
An Anxious Look Ahead
What happens now? The IMD has forecast below-normal rainfall for August across most of Karnataka, which could be influenced by a strengthening El Niño effect. While some brief spells of rain are predicted, they may not be enough to significantly alter the grim water storage situation. The winds blowing across the state, while pleasant, have been lacking the necessary moisture to generate substantial rain. The BWSSB has assured residents that there is no immediate shortage and that contingency plans involving water tankers are in place. However, they have also urged citizens to use water responsibly as a precaution. This situation puts Karnataka in a difficult position, especially concerning its water-sharing agreements with neighboring states, a contentious issue that becomes more acute during deficit years.
