The wait is finally over for one of India’s busiest travel routes. Indian Railways has officially flagged off the Bengaluru-Mumbai Vande Bharat sleeper, introducing a game-changing overnight service that promises faster travel and enhanced comfort.
A New Era of Overnight Travel
On
November 1, 2026, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw flagged off the much-anticipated Vande Bharat sleeper train connecting Bengaluru's Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT) with Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). This launch marks a significant milestone, seamlessly connecting India's IT hub with its financial capital through a modern, high-speed overnight service. The 16-coach train will operate six days a week, offering a premium travel alternative for passengers on this high-demand corridor. Regular services are set to begin from Mumbai on November 2 and from Bengaluru on November 3.
Cutting-Edge Comfort and Design
Designed for long-distance journeys, the Vande Bharat sleeper prioritises passenger comfort. The train features three classes of air-conditioned accommodation: First AC, AC Two-Tier, and AC Three-Tier. Berths are ergonomically designed to be wider and better cushioned than those in existing premium trains. Each berth is equipped with individual reading lights and charging points. The interior boasts improved soundproofing for a quieter journey and advanced suspension systems to minimise jerks. Passengers in First AC will have the exclusive amenity of hot-water showers, a first for many routes. The train also features sensor-based taps, bio-vacuum toilets, and an advanced infotainment system.
Faster Journeys with Enhanced Safety
The Vande Bharat sleeper is engineered to significantly reduce travel time. While most existing trains take 22 hours or more for the journey, the new service is scheduled to cover the distance in approximately 16 hours. This is made possible by the train's self_propelled technology, which allows for quicker acceleration and deceleration. Safety is another key focus, with the train equipped with the indigenous KAVACH automatic train protection system to prevent collisions. Additionally, CCTV cameras are installed in all coaches, alongside modern fire detection and suppression systems, ensuring a secure travel environment.
Route and Schedule Details
The train will operate six days a week, with no service from Bengaluru on Mondays and from Mumbai on Tuesdays. The service from Bengaluru (27652) is scheduled to depart at 7:45 p.m. and arrive in Mumbai at 11:55 a.m. the next day. In the return direction, the train from Mumbai (27651) will leave at 8:10 p.m. and reach Bengaluru at noon the following day. The train will make eight stops at key stations including Pune, Solapur, Kalaburagi, and Guntakal, improving connectivity for several towns across Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra.
A Leap Forward for Indian Railways
The launch of the Bengaluru–Mumbai Vande Bharat sleeper is more than just a new train; it represents the next phase in the modernisation of Indian Railways. Following the introduction of sleeper services on routes like Howrah–Guwahati, this launch expands the network of premium overnight trains. These 'Make in India' trains are designed and manufactured domestically, with BEML in Bengaluru playing a key role in their assembly. The new service is expected to be a strong competitor to both existing premium trains and budget airlines, offering a comfortable, time–efficient, and modern alternative for millions of travellers.
