The Route and Timings
The Vande Bharat Express provides a direct link between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar. The primary service, train number 26401, departs from Jammu Tawi at 6:20 AM and reaches Srinagar at 11:10 AM, completing the journey in approximately 4 hours and 50 minutes.
For the return journey, train 26402 leaves Srinagar at 2:00 PM and arrives in Jammu Tawi at 6:50 PM. This service operates six days a week, with no service on Tuesdays. Key stops along this scenic route include Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK), Reasi, and Banihal, connecting major tourist, pilgrimage, and local centres.
An Engineering Marvel
This train journey is an experience in itself, running on the newly completed Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL). This ambitious project, built at a cost of over ₹43,000 crore, navigates the challenging Himalayan terrain with 36 tunnels and 943 bridges. Passengers will travel across two of India’s most iconic engineering feats: the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge, and the Anji Khad Bridge, the country's first cable-stayed rail bridge. This all-weather link provides a reliable alternative to the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, which is often prone to weather-related disruptions.
Special All-Weather Features
This is not just any Vande Bharat; it has been specially designed for the region's climate. The train is equipped with 'winterisation' technology to operate smoothly in temperatures as low as -20°C. Features include heated windshields to prevent fogging, self-regulating heating cables to stop water pipelines from freezing, and thermally insulated lavatories. These customisations ensure that the service remains a dependable, year-round travel option, providing unprecedented connectivity for the Kashmir Valley.
Onboard Comfort and Amenities
Like other Vande Bharat trains, the Jammu-Srinagar service offers a premium travel experience. It is equipped with the 'Kavach' automatic train protection system for enhanced safety. Inside, passengers can expect comfortable, 180-degree rotating seats, large windows for panoramic views, a GPS-based passenger information system, and onboard Wi-Fi. The train has two classes of travel: AC Chair Car (CC) and Executive Chair Car (EC), both offering a significant upgrade in comfort compared to road travel.
Fares and How to Book
Ticket prices are competitive, especially when compared to airfares or the cost and time of road travel. For the Jammu-Srinagar route, fares for the AC Chair Car (CC) start from approximately ₹715. The Executive Chair Car (EC), which offers more spacious seating, is priced at around ₹1,320. Prices can vary slightly depending on the specific service and demand. Bookings can be made easily through the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in) or its mobile application. Given the high demand since its launch, it is advisable to book tickets well in advance.
