An Intensifying Monsoon Picture
After a slower-than-expected start in June, which saw significant rainfall deficits in some areas, the Southwest Monsoon is now gaining momentum. The IMD has confirmed that conditions are favourable for the monsoon to advance further into parts of Gujarat,
Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand over the next three to four days. This increased activity brings much-needed rain but also necessitates caution. The current weather pattern is a complex mix, with intense rainfall in some parts of the country while others, like Uttar Pradesh, continue to experience heatwave conditions.
Region 1: Northeast and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal
Northeast India is on high alert, with the IMD forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall. Specifically, Assam and Meghalaya are predicted to receive extremely heavy spells on June 28. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are also under a red alert, with expectations of extremely heavy downpours that could exceed 204.5 mm. This intense rainfall raises significant concerns about potential flooding and landslides in these hilly regions. Authorities have advised residents in these areas, which also include Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, to remain vigilant.
Region 2: The Western Coast
The western coast is another focal point for the monsoon's fury. Widespread rainfall is expected to continue over the Konkan coast and Goa. Heavy rainfall warnings have been issued for these areas, with alerts also in place for coastal Karnataka. The advance of the monsoon through this region is crucial for agriculture and for replenishing water reservoirs, but the intensity also brings the risk of waterlogging and travel disruptions, particularly in urban centres like Mumbai, which has already started receiving heavy showers.
Region 3: Central and Eastern India
Central and Eastern India are also bracing for significant weather activity. Heavy rainfall is likely in Odisha, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana. The monsoon's advance through areas like Indore and Mandla signifies its push into the country's heartland. Fairly widespread rainfall is predicted for Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh over the next few days. For states like Bihar and Odisha, the heavy rain is expected to be accompanied by thunderstorm activity and moderate to intense lightning.
Essential Safety Precautions
With heavy rain comes the risk of urban flooding, traffic chaos, and potential for water-borne diseases. It is crucial to take precautions. Avoid driving through waterlogged streets and check for traffic advisories before travelling. Ensure drains around your home are clear to prevent local flooding. Secure loose items on balconies or in outdoor areas that could be affected by gusty winds. Stay away from overflowing rivers and streams. It is also wise to prepare a basic emergency kit with essentials like a flashlight, first-aid supplies, and clean drinking water.
Staying Informed
Weather conditions can change rapidly during the monsoon. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, it is best to follow official sources. The IMD provides regular updates, including district-wise warnings and nowcasts, through its website and social media channels. Paying attention to these advisories can help you stay safe and plan your activities accordingly, especially if you live in one of the regions forecast to receive heavy rainfall. Being prepared is the best way to navigate the challenges posed by an active monsoon.
