A New Centre for Excellence
The latest push comes from the Union Ministry of Textiles, which recently inaugurated a Centre of Excellence for Handloom Technology (CoE-HT) at IIT Delhi on August 3, 2026. This initiative marks a significant step towards modernising the sector by bridging
the gap between India's rich weaving traditions and cutting-edge research. The Centre aims to be a national hub for innovation, bringing together academics, industry experts, and weavers to develop practical solutions. The government's goal is clear: to build a future-ready handloom ecosystem that enhances productivity, expands market access, and improves the livelihoods of the more than 3.5 million weavers and allied workers in the sector.
What is 'Loom Modernisation'?
The term 'loom modernisation' might sound like it involves replacing traditional looms with power looms, but the reality is more nuanced. The focus is not on full mechanisation, which would erase the 'hand-woven' essence, but on technological upgrades that reduce physical strain and boost efficiency. This includes integrating tools like computer-aided design (CAD) software, which allows weavers to create and visualise complex patterns digitally before weaving, saving time and resources. Other key advancements are ergonomic tools to lessen physical strain and upgraded mechanisms like electronic jacquards or dobbies. These attachments to traditional looms help automate the process of creating intricate designs, enabling weavers to produce complex patterns faster and more consistently.
Five Flagship Initiatives Launched
Alongside the Centre of Excellence, the Ministry launched five specific projects to drive this transformation. The 'Handloom 4.0 Mobile App' allows for digital monitoring of a loom's productivity and maintenance. 'Handloom e-Vidya' is a digital learning platform for skill development. 'HandloomX' acts as an incubator to support startups in the sector. The 'Kalagriha Handloom Studio' aims to connect contemporary consumers with authentic products through customisation and visualisation tools. Finally, 'Threads of Valour' is a sustainability initiative focused on recycling textiles. Together, these projects aim to tackle everything from skill development and quality control to market access and entrepreneurship.
Benefits for Weavers and the Sector
For weavers, these technological interventions promise significant benefits. Increased productivity and the ability to create more complex, customised designs can lead to higher income. Digital platforms like the Indian Handmade Portal offer direct access to global markets, cutting out intermediaries and ensuring fairer compensation. This empowerment is crucial for a workforce where 70% are women and many face financial hardship. For the sector as a whole, this initiative aims to enhance the global competitiveness of Indian handlooms. By integrating technology for authenticity, traceability, and design innovation, the goal is to make handloom products more appealing to a broader, modern consumer base while preserving their unique cultural value.
Challenges on the Path to Modernity
Despite the promise, the road ahead has challenges. A key concern is ensuring that technology supplements, rather than replaces, the artisan's skill. The handloom sector already faces stiff competition from cheaper, mass-produced textiles from power looms. There is also a significant training gap; many weavers lack the digital literacy to take full advantage of new tools and e-commerce platforms. The cost of adopting new technologies can also be a barrier for individual artisans. The success of these initiatives will depend heavily on effective implementation, providing accessible training, and ensuring that the financial benefits of modernisation flow directly to the weavers themselves, preventing the further decline of artisans in this vital sector.
