Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, encompassing nearly 150,000 adults. This extensive monitoring period allowed scientists to draw powerful associations between participants' long-term exercise habits and their health outcomes, specifically their risk of mortality from various causes. The study tracked both aerobic activity and resistance training, which included everything from lifting weights to bodyweight exercises like push-ups and squats.
The Longevity Sweet Spot: 90 to 120 Minutes
The core finding grabbing headlines is the identification of a distinct 'sweet spot' for strength training. Participants who consistently engaged in 90 to 120 minutes of resistance exercise per week were found to have a 13% lower risk of dying from any cause compared to those who did no strength training. The benefits were even more pronounced for specific conditions. This level of activity was associated with a 19% lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease and a remarkable 27% lower risk from neurological diseases like Alzheimer's. This suggests that a moderate, consistent routine can have a powerful protective effect on your long-term health.
Are There Limits to the Benefits?
Perhaps one of the most surprising findings was that more isn't necessarily better. The researchers discovered that the health benefits appeared to plateau after 120 minutes of weekly strength training. According to the data, engaging in more than two hours of resistance work per week provided no additional reduction in mortality risk. This finding challenges the 'more is more' mentality that can dominate fitness culture. It suggests that for the goal of general health and longevity, an efficient and sustainable routine is more critical than spending countless hours in the gym. Interestingly, the study found that a reduced risk of cancer was associated with lower amounts of training, between 1 and 59 minutes per week.
The Power of a Combined Approach
While the focus has been on strength work, the study powerfully reinforces the importance of a balanced fitness regimen. The absolute lowest mortality risk was observed in individuals who combined strength training with regular aerobic exercise. Participants who paired 60 to 119 minutes of strength training with high levels of aerobic activity (such as brisk walking, running, or cycling) saw up to a 45% lower risk of death compared to inactive individuals. This highlights that for optimal health, strength training should be a partner to cardiovascular exercise, not a replacement for it. Each type of exercise provides unique benefits, from improving cardiorespiratory fitness to enhancing metabolic health and muscle mass.
How to Structure Your Week
Hitting that 90-to-120-minute sweet spot is more achievable than it may sound. The key is consistency. You could structure your week with two dedicated 60-minute sessions that cover all major muscle groups. Alternatively, three 40-minute workouts or even four 30-minute sessions would comfortably place you within the optimal range. Remember that strength training isn't just about lifting heavy weights. It can include using resistance bands, performing bodyweight exercises like squats, lunges, and push-ups, or even some forms of yoga and Pilates.
