A new forecast from Boston Consulting Group (BCG) has put a massive number on the artificial intelligence revolution: a net market opportunity of up to $200 billion for AI service providers by 2030. But what does this opportunity truly entail?
Deconstructing the $200 Billion Forecast
According
to a recent report from Boston Consulting Group, the rise of AI-led services is set to dramatically reshape the global technology services market. The firm projects that AI will generate between $300 billion and $400 billion in new work by 2030. However, this growth doesn't exist in a vacuum. The report also anticipates that AI-driven efficiencies will displace or make redundant approximately $200 billion in traditional services revenue. This leaves a 'net new' market opportunity estimated to be between $100 billion and $200 billion. This figure represents the true prize for companies that can successfully pivot and capture the demand for a new class of technology services.
What Are 'AI Services'?
The services driving this growth extend far beyond simply using AI tools. They involve a fundamental rethinking of how businesses operate. BCG points to the rise of 'Applied AI' and 'Agentic AI' — systems that can autonomously plan, reason, and execute complex, multi-step tasks to achieve business outcomes. The opportunity for service providers lies in helping clients with everything from strategy and identifying high-value use cases to the technical implementation of these sophisticated AI systems. This includes building custom AI models, modernizing data infrastructure, managing governance and risk, and redesigning core business workflows around human-AI collaboration. It’s less about selling a piece of software and more about delivering transformation as a service.
The Players in a Shifting Arena
This market is not just for the tech giants. The providers in question range from large-scale global IT and consulting firms, like BCG itself, to a new breed of 'AI-native' startups that have built their entire business around AI. A key theme in BCG's analysis is the challenge facing traditional technology services companies, which are dominant in the current market. These firms must rapidly evolve to compete. For global players, and particularly for India's massive IT services industry which accounts for a significant share of the global market, this represents both a major threat and a colossal opportunity. The race is on to develop the capabilities required to deliver these advanced AI solutions at scale.
The Talent Challenge: A Question of Reskilling
Perhaps the most critical finding in the BCG report, titled 'The Talent Is Already on Your Payroll. The Clock Isn't', is that the primary hurdle isn't a shortage of talent, but a failure to effectively reskill the existing workforce. The report highlights a stark gap: at traditional tech services firms, only 10–15% of the AI–focused workforce is in 'Applied AI' roles — those who build and deploy solutions. At AI–native companies, that figure is 90–95%. BCG argues that tech firms must shift their mindset from hiring externally to identifying and upskilling their current employees. The success of these companies will depend on their ability to transform their workforce to meet a new kind of client demand where payment is based on outcomes, not billable hours.
It's Not a Gold Rush, It's a Marathon
While the $200 billion figure is compelling, capturing a piece of it will be a complex undertaking. Enterprises are moving from scattered AI experiments to expecting real, measurable returns on their investments. Service providers will need to prove they can deliver tangible business value, not just technological novelty. This requires a fundamental reinvention of service portfolios, delivery models, and commercial structures around AI capabilities. The companies that hesitate risk being left behind as their clients push forward with AI adoption, with or without them. The firms that move with speed and clarity, however, will be positioned to lead the next era of growth in technology services.
