As generalist roles recede, a new class of specialist is in high demand. Nearly two-thirds of new GCC roles now require specific, high-tech skills. The most sought-after experts are those in AI and machine learning, data science, cloud computing, and cybersecurity. There is a significant shortage of talent in these fields, with demand for AI specialists having jumped over 300% since 2024. This has created a candidate-driven market for those with the right qualifications, with companies offering salary premiums of 30-40% for these specialised skills. Other high-growth areas include platform engineering, product management, and intelligent automation. Even traditional business functions now require a tech-focused, data-driven approach.
Making the Career Pivot: A Survival Guide
For professionals in generalist roles, this trend is a clear signal: upskilling is no longer optional, it is essential for survival. The good news is that many GCCs are investing heavily in training their existing workforce to fill these new, advanced positions. Professionals should proactively seek these opportunities. The path forward involves moving from broad knowledge to deep expertise. A backend developer might train to become an applied AI engineer, or a data analyst could upskill into a machine learning specialist. Earning certifications in high-demand platforms like AWS or Azure, or in fields like cybersecurity, can significantly boost a profile.
