A Leap in Connectivity and Speed
The Railway Board has officially approved the Surat-Udaipur City Vande Bharat Express, a move that provides Surat with its first-ever Vande Bharat service and creates a vital direct link between South Gujarat and southern Rajasthan. The semi-high-speed
train is expected to cover the approximately 690-kilometre distance in just 7 hours and 30 minutes, a significant reduction compared to existing travel options. Operating six days a week, except on Tuesdays, this service promises a faster, more comfortable, and efficient mode of transport for thousands of daily travellers. The train, numbered 26903/26904, will be an eight-coach service operated and maintained by the Western Railway zone.
The Journey: Route and Timings
The route is strategically designed to connect several key commercial and cultural centres. Departing from Surat at 6:10 AM, the train will reach Udaipur City at 1:40 PM. On its return journey, it will leave Udaipur at 3:35 PM and arrive back in Surat at 11:00 PM. The service includes nine crucial stops along the way: Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Maninagar, Asarva, Himmatnagar, Shamlaji Road, Dungarpur, and Zawar. This route effectively extends the premium train connectivity that previously ended at Asarva (Ahmedabad) all the way to Surat, integrating major industrial areas of Gujarat with the tourist circuits of Rajasthan. The new service will replace the existing Udaipur City-Asarva Vande Bharat, which was introduced in February 2026.
A Major Boost for Tourism
Udaipur, often called the 'City of Lakes', is one of India's premier tourist destinations. This new Vande Bharat service makes it significantly more accessible for tourists from Surat and the prosperous South Gujarat region. The convenient morning departure from Surat and an afternoon return from Udaipur are ideal for weekend getaways and short trips, which is expected to provide a substantial boost to Udaipur's hospitality and tourism sectors. The launch, anticipated before the Navratri festival, is timed to capture the peak festive travel season, which will likely see high demand from tourists and families visiting their hometowns.
Economic and Commercial Implications
Beyond tourism, the train is a boon for trade and commerce. Surat is a global powerhouse in textiles and diamonds, while Udaipur and its surrounding regions are rich in minerals and have a growing industrial base. By providing a fast and reliable connection, the Vande Bharat Express will facilitate easier business travel, strengthen supply chain logistics, and foster closer economic ties between the two states. For professionals commuting between these cities, the journey time reduction and modern amenities onboard the Vande Bharat—like Wi-Fi, comfortable seating, and onboard catering—make rail travel a far more attractive proposition than road or conventional trains.
The Vande Bharat Experience
As with other Vande Bharat services across the country, passengers can expect a significant upgrade in travel experience. These indigenously designed trainsets are known for their modern amenities, smooth ride quality, and focus on safety and passenger comfort. Capable of reaching speeds up to 160 kmph, the train offers an airline-like experience on rails. This new service is Gujarat's sixth Vande Bharat train, reflecting a broader push by Indian Railways to modernize its network and enhance intercity connectivity across the nation. It represents a tangible step forward in making train travel a preferred choice for medium-distance journeys, combining speed with convenience and comfort.
