Understanding the Problem
Balcony waterlogging is a familiar sight for many during India's rainy season. It usually happens for a few simple reasons: the built-in drain outlet is too small, blocked by debris, or, in some cases, the balcony floor doesn't have the correct slope
to guide water towards the drain. This pooling water is not just an inconvenience; it can damage tile grout, cause paint to peel, and lead to the growth of mould and mildew. Over time, it can even affect the structural integrity of the balcony. Before you can fix the problem, it is important to identify the cause. Take a moment during the next downpour to observe how the water flows and where it gathers. This will be key to positioning your new drainage solution effectively.
Your Automated Siphon Solution
When we say 'automated', you might think of expensive sensors and pumps, but the solution we're building is far simpler and relies on basic physics. We will create an automatic siphon. A siphon is a tube that allows liquid to flow from a higher point to a lower one without any mechanical pump. Once the flow starts, gravity and atmospheric pressure keep it going until the water source is depleted. By creating a simple siphon system, you can set it up once at the start of the monsoon, and it will automatically start draining your balcony whenever water pools to a certain level. It's a true 'set it and forget it' solution that costs next to nothing to operate.
Gathering Your Materials
This project is designed to be incredibly low-cost, and you can find most of these materials at any local hardware store. Here’s what you’ll need: 1. Flexible Tubing: About 2-3 metres of clear, flexible plastic tubing (like the kind used for aquariums or construction levelling). A diameter of about half an inch is perfect. 2. A Small, Shallow Container: This will be the starting point for your siphon. A sturdy plastic food container, a cut-down plastic bottle, or even an old soap dish will work perfectly. It just needs to be heavy enough not to float away. 3. Mesh Filter: A small piece of screen, like an old window screen or a piece of fine plastic mesh, to prevent leaves and debris from clogging your tube. 4. Waterproof Tape or Cable Ties: To secure the tubing in place so it doesn’t move around in the wind and rain.
Step 1: Assembling the Siphon
First, prepare your container. If you are using a plastic container, carefully drill or cut a hole in the side, close to the bottom, just large enough to fit your flexible tubing snugly. Next, take your mesh filter. Cut a small piece and place it over the opening of the tube inside the container. This is crucial for preventing blockages. You can secure it with a cable tie or simply ensure it's held in place by the container wall. The goal is to create a filter that lets water in but keeps debris out. Now, insert one end of your flexible tube into the hole. It should be a tight fit. Your simple siphon intake is now ready.
Step 2: Positioning and Priming
Place your assembled container in the area of your balcony where water collects the most. This is your 'high point'. Now, run the flexible tube from this container to the edge of your balcony, ensuring the open end is hanging down and is lower than the container. To start the siphon, you need to 'prime' it by filling the tube with water. An easy way to do this is to submerge the entire tube and container in a bucket of water until all air bubbles are gone. Then, keeping both ends of the tube underwater, place the container on the balcony floor and hold your finger over the other end as you move it to its final drainage position over the edge. Release your finger, and the flow should begin.
Step 3: Securing and Maintaining
Once you have the siphon working, use waterproof tape or cable ties to secure the tubing. Make sure it's fastened to the balcony railing or wall so it doesn’t get dislodged by wind or heavy rain. The system is now automated. Whenever rainwater fills the container on your balcony floor, the siphon will activate and drain the water away. The only maintenance required is to periodically check that the mesh filter is clean and free of debris. A quick rinse every few weeks, especially after a heavy storm, will ensure your system works flawlessly throughout the entire rainy season.
